A CAI'S BIG FUNERAL.
Zrrrr lahabitant f Ike KlIIadelphfa

The entire village of Nar berth Ta
went to the funeral of "Old Mat"
who va 1 iried there recently.
"Old Mat" had certainly earned as
much ri?ht to be called a weli-kncwn
ar.d old-respected citizen"' as many
xvh.D trc":ed on two l" 1 than he
did says the Xew i ork Journal.
He wa only a eat but by his con-
tpienoTis sagacity his purring kindli-
ness ar.d Lis undaunted courage be
had gained the respect of every in-
habitant of Xarberth and the sur-
rounding country. Perhaps stray
dogs learned to re.pect him most of
ill.'
Ceor?e L. Erimley was the owner of
'Old Mat and he declared that the
cat was invaluable as a "watchdog
having tnce taclled eSngle-Jianded or
er rather fonr-footed a gang of bur-
glars who forced an entrance to
Ilrimley'a Ktore and effectually driven
them away with the loss of eeveral
e'awful of hair and f esh.
When the news of "Old Mat's
4eath became known everybody in
J'arlerth felt as if an old friend had
gone from among them and it waa
determined to give -Mat" such a fu-
neral as never before fell to the lot
of a cat. A mall casket lined with
eilk was made and covered by a killc
cloak Minde for the purpose. Into tliia
the battle-scarred body of "Old Mat"
was reverently laid.
The funeral services were held la
the back parlor of the Trimley house-
hold. Three' hundred people attend-
ed filling the house and front and
tack yards. Harry lirimley delivered
an exhaustive eulogy over the re-
mains. Then all retired to the ceme-
tery Rituated In the back yard. In
the center of the lawn a deep grave
had been dug and around this the
mourners ranged themselvea. The
casket was lowered amid an Imprea-
tive silence. .
The following day a neat little
tone waa erected over "Old Mat'a

AMERICAN SPECTACLES.

adars All Ar..nd tbe-
YVorld. "Up to 15 years ago" aald an opti-
cian reports a 5ew York exchange
"Jour-fifth of all the finer pectaclea
lined were made In France. In the past
six or eight years French upectaclea
have leen largely aupplanted by
American glasses; which are now sold
even in France.
"American spectacles are now easily
the befit lathe world and their uperi
ority is due to the name characterises
tnat mark o many American manu-
factured production namely adapta-
bility to their use good workmanship
uniformity and interchangeability of
parts. There have been made in this
country great improvements in the
tpeeial machinery with which the
f Iectaden are made so that the parts
are produced with precision.
"You will xre an increasing number
of eigns naying that f pectaclea can be
mended while' you wait. THis can be
done with these finely mad! American
apeetacle. You break a bow for in-
stance of your bteel six'ctacles and
nny one of a thousand lmws of the
name style will fit in place of It.
"American hpcctacles may not be
the cheapest produced in the world
but they are certainly the best Hnd a
good projwirtion of-the population of
the world that nsea glasses now look
through jiectaclcs of American man
ufact ure.
"We pa' much more attention to
our eyes in this eountry now than we
formerly did. There are many more
oculists here than there formerly
were itnd many more skilled opticians.
And ""f people who ought to wear
glasses including for instance chil-
dren a greater proport ion now than
ever before do wear them.
"I dare say that a third of the pec-
ticlcs now made iu this country are
exported and our exports of these
good u;e all the time Increasing. We
sell spectacles in China in Australia
and New Zealand in South America
and South Africa and some as I said
in France and more o.less of them in
Ocrmany and other countries of con-
tinental Furoj-e. "Large numbers of
American spectacles are Bold in Great
Britain. I guess you would find that
shipments of Mich goods from here to
England are made as often as weekly.
I imagine that there ore now worn in
England and in .Scotland more spec-
tacles of American than of anyotbr
nanufacture."
