BRYAN IN NEBRASKA.
Kockville llnd.) Tribune: William
J Bryan's course at the Baltimore
convention was overwhelmingly in-
dorsed at the Nebraska state conven-
Itlon. Mr. Bryan has been severely
criticised by those who objected to
j his change from Clark to Wilson on
the ground that the Nebraska dele-
gates had been Instructed at a primary
. lection for Clark. But the vote for
Clark as Mr. Bryan construed It was
a vote for him as a progressive not
a reactionary and the instructions
were more binding on the Issues than
on the personality of the candidate. It
was eminently proper under the cir-
cumstances that the question should
he submitted to a referendum vote of
the state convention. Tills was op-
posed by Mr. Bryan's personal en-
emies who illogically opposed the
very thing that would prove whether
or not he disobeyed the mandate of
his people. The speech of Mr. Met-
calfe in defense of Mr. Bryan's posi-
tion was one of the best ever deliver-
ed before a popular assembly With
such a speech not to mention the
cause it advocated it Is not Strang
that the vote of approval was so large.

Snowstorms In July.
Early In July there occurred snow-
storms In certain very warm regions.
notably about Mount Etna which at
this time begins to scatter the accu-
mulation of snow which that volcano
has conserved during the winter. The
crater of Etna Is 3379 meters In
height and during the winter months
the snow packs into the crevices of
the mountain to be driven out by the
summer winds.

upward of one thousand and one hun-

Philosophy of Pessimism.
The visitor dared to ask- why Mr.
Hardy was "so pessimistic a writer."
This was the reply: "You are a young
man. The cruelty of fata hernmna UK-
parent to people as they grow older.
At first one may perhaps escape con -
tact with It but If one lives long
enough one realizes that happiness Is
very ephemmeral." "But Is not opti-
mism a useful and sane philosophy?"
the visitor asked. "There's too much
sham optimism humbugging and even
cruel optimism" Mr. Hardy retorted.
"Sham optimism is really a more
heartless doctrine to preach than even
an exaggerated pessimism the latter
leaves one at least on the safe side.
There Is too much sentiment in most
fiction. It is necessary for somebody
to write a little mercilessly although
of course it's painful to have to do
