The Axial Rotation of Von us.
For over two ceuturles it was gener-
ally accepted that like the imrtb the
planet Venus rotated on He axis in a
little less than lwonty-fntir hours but
Ince Schlapnrelll after long and 4-are-fal
observation of the planet suggest-
ed that the actual rotation period' was
between six and nine lconths astron-
omers have devoted tnttcli attention io
this matter. In the Observatory M.
Denning sums up the available ovl
donee on tho iiolnt and cau ouly con-
clude that this particular problem still
defies solution. Lift on Vetius would
bo very different from HCo on tho earth

tmu as in that case the samo hemi-
sphere wo"id always be turned to the
sun nnd enjoy iwpchial dny while the
opposlto hemisphere would be doomed
to eternal night.

Extravagant In Dress.
Very few persons outside c the
glittering circle ot our enormously
rich families who constitute what is
referred to as "the best society" can
understand bow any young woman in

of money as are expended by the
daughters of some of these tamlllafl.
The history of the world doea sot
show such reckless extravagance In
the way of dress. Nor for the mat-
ter of that does the history ot the
world show so riotous a use of money
as that practiced by our yery rleh In
ther strictly social dlvertisentents.
