DASHED INTO DEEP WATER
Atlantic City Scene of Dire
Catastrophe.
(Dy Aaaoclatad Press.)
Atlnntt: City Oct. 2. At least
fifty persons and in till probability
sixty or seventy tint their lives In a
horrible manner Just outside this city
at 2:30 o'clock yeaterday afternoon
when a three-car eteotrlc train over
tho Pennsylvania railroad's third rail
syi-tem running about 35 miles an
Ik it. stntck a spreading rail on the
draw bridge that carries the tracks
over the leach thoroughfare and
plunged headlong Into .15 feet of
water. ISvery w.an woman and child
In the first two cars perished without
even a remote fighting chance ."or
their lives. The esrs were closely
ve.stlb-'led with air tight windows.
There was no o raping from them.
From the third car a few managed
to make their way from tho rear end
as this rested abeve water on one of
the projortlng piers of the bridge.
Ilut they were out and bruised and
half drowned and they said that there
were as many more persons left In
the car who could not get out. All
the dead and Injured lived In Penn-
sylvania. Disaster Become More Appalling.
As the details of yesterdiy's terri-
ble weck on the electric line of the
West Jersey & Scftshoro railway de-
veloped during the night the disaster
became more appalling. The total
number of persons whose lives were
tnuffed o.rt. almost iustantly Is prob-
ably sixty-Blx with nearly a score In-
jured several of whom It la thought
will die. Forty-eight b dies have al-
ready been brought to the surface.
Ther. were ntueiy-o:ie persons on the
train. Twenty-live of this nuir.ber
have been accounted for which with
the bodies recovered bring the total
dead to seventy-three. This leates
eighteeu not accounted for and who
are awppo-ed la have been drowned.
It Is possible some of these may inner
be found. It Is the belief of the
divers that some bodies Hosted
through the broken windows o. t luto
the tboro'-ghtnre and were carried by
the SMlft current into the Atlantic.
The thim rjghfaro In a small wsterwny
a :r.le outside of thl- city. A fishing
schooner had Just passed through the
drawbridge when tho electric train
hovo in sight. Uoforo tho draw swung
into place the throo cars running at
a high rnto of speed dashed onto the
trestle which -Is twenty feet high.
The forward car left the rails nnd
dashed Into the guard rail the other
two following. Tho first two cant
were Instantly submerged but til?
third caught on tho abutment where
It remained suspended. It was this
car from which nearly all of the In-
jure.! escaped. When the two ears
struck the bottom of the waterway
dry stood almost on end. The first
diver did not descend until several
hour.- after the accident occurred (fe
reported the victim packed la the
lower ends of the submerged cars so
tightly that it was difficult to move
them. Wiliuu dually taken o.it the
bodies one by one were carried to a
wailing train aud laid side by side
later to l- borne to this city and
plac' i In the tc.i porary morgue.
ThoisumlH of persons were gathered
at the scene and a 'core of boats sur-
