made by some of the cattlemen to
avoid the tax. on the claim that they
had already paid taxes on the cattle
d in in Texas but this did not sat-
isfy the Pawnee county officials.

method however to escape the tax

levylnn of the tax. Sheriff Ponroy at-
tached the cattle but courteously left
them In charge of the cattleman's em-
ployes. When the cattleman learned
of the sheriff" actions he In-.raeunue-ly
shlppe. the cattle to market; Thla
was not technically n violation of the
law aa the cattle in being shipped
were handled by the sheriffs agents
This year Sheriff Putnroy again at-
tached the came cattleman's herds
but he left hi own deputies In charge.
The cattle were to be sold at sheriff's
sale next Monday to satisfy two
years' taxea 1805 aud 1900. The cat-
tleman again tried to avoid this pay-
ment by Axing up a plan with his
cowboys tc Blampede the cattle
while they were In the hands of Pum-
ioy deputies and thua foil the
sheriff again Pumroy was advised
however ol' this plan and set extra
deputies to the scene As a result
theie was no btampeoing. On the
contrary the cattletran appeared dur-
ing the last week hi Pawnee paid the
two j ears' taxes In full and in addi-
tion toal costs airountlng to nearly
two tlr usanrt dollars.
