HEADLESS YET ALIVE.
Insects That Continue to Hslst After
Docupltiitlon.
Must persons of nn observing turn of
mind are awnro of thu fact that there
are several species of Insects that will
contln'te to live without seeming Incon-
venience for some time after decapita-
tion exact knowledge on tho length of
time which tho various species of In-
sects would survive such mutilation
being somewhnt vngue.
Professor Conestrlnl once undertook
a series of experiments with n view of
determining that nnd other facts In re-
lation to tho wouderful vitality of such
creatures. In each case tho head was
smoothly removed with a pnlr of thin
bladed forceps and when spontaneous
movements of tho wings and logs cens-
ed ho employed sundry Irritating de-
vices such as pricking squeezing nnd
blowing tobacco smoke over tho insect.
Ah a result of these experiments he as-
certained that members of the beetle
family at once showed slgns.of suffer-
ing while such as ants bees wasps
etc. remained for hours unaffmed.
Some which seemed stunned from tho
effects of the operation recovered after
a time nnd continued to live nnd enjoy
a headless existence for several days.
Butterflies nnd moths seemed but llttlo
nffected by the guillotining process and
tho common flies (dlptern) appealed to
regard tho operation ns n huge Jolto
"Tho common house fly." said the ex-
perimenter "appeared to be In full pos-
nosslon of his sonsos (rather parador-
Ical when In all probability tbe ca-
nary had swallowed head sense and
all) thirty-six hours ufter being opor
nted upon."
Tho bodies of some apecloe of-butler-fllcg
surilvfd as lou ns eighteen days
after tho bead had been rcuwved. but
the bond Itself seldom showed kIriii of
life lontfer than six hours arw derupl
tatlon. In the general sum wary of
these huge experiments wt are Inform-
ed (hat the last stgna of life wei-p man-
ifested either In the middle or last pair
of legs and that tbo nyrlopodH showed
great tenselty at life "uud trtfMmroii
wholly Indifferent to the loss of their
bonds."
