REMARKABLE MILITARY "DUNC."
Speaking of "gottlng It" on n vast
scale think of that trick by which CO
per cont has boon added In the twink-
ling of an oyo to tho largo sularlos of
retiring gonorals. Congressman
Prince hi his recent Bpooch showed
that on Dec. 1 1905 thoro wore 90S
army officers on tho rotlred list who
wero receiving annually ?2700000 or
an average of $3000 each. Of those
903 retired officers threo aro lieuten-
ant generals 21 major gonorals 245
brigadier generals. 70 colonols. 70 lieu-
tenant colonels 22G majors. 1G9 cap-
tains 55 first lieutenants 11 second
lloutenants and 2" aro retired army
chaplains. It will bo observed that
tho numbor of brigadier genoralg and
of majors Is greatly In oxcosh of the
numbor of any other rank on tho re
tired list. There are only oleven sec
ond lieutenants. But an even 111 or ft
InterosUug state of affairs was re-
vealed by Mr. Prince. Of these 245
brigadiers lie pointed out that sixty-
two had served in that rank for not
more than one day and had been retir-
ed and four of the twenty-one majors
iiad had a similar service of one day in
their retired rank. We quote from the
