The little foxes spoil the vines tho
little leaks wreck the ship and the lit-
tle losses In the kitchen help to create
a deficit at the end of the year.
When thrlftlessness is not due to ig-
norance it is plain unadulterated mor-
al weakness and any woman ought to
bo asharued of herself who Is guilty of
tho offense of letting things go to
waste in her kitchen as much so as if
she were caught in the commission of
the most flagrant' sin.
If tho thrlftlessneis is due to igno-
rance then tht best thing the house-
wife can do is to go to school where
sbo can learn tho A B C's of domestic
economy. Many women buy econom
ically but waste what' they have by .
lack oc care.
For Instance often when tbe whlto
of an egg ta used the yolk Is left to
harden and Is finally thrown out By
pouring a llttlo wnter over the top of it
the yolk may bo kept soft.
If hardened It may be brought back
to a usablo condition by ndding to it a
little milk. Tho whlto of an egg may
be kept without any difficulty provid
ed It Is kept covered. i
In most families bread is a great
source of waste. If spread with butter
on tho crust when first taken from the
oven it will keep fresh longer. If this
Is not dono tho loaf should bo left tn
wrapping paper and will then retain
Its moisture. I
Run the dry bread through the chop-
per and save the crumbs for croquettes
and for the various purposes for which '
crumbs nro so necessary. Right hero

tains. Economy Is subserved by bav-
ins only two yards of tho silk tho
modus operandi as follows: First tho
eiMa Is run on tho rod (one yard) then
the two white cnrtalns. then tho re-
maining silk one. They are drawn
back on the rod on cither side leaving
the window exposed on the wide ledge
of which stands a jardiniere containing (
asparagus fern. This window gives
character to tho whole reception hall.
Silk In shades to harmonize with the
wall may be substituted. Good House-
keeping. Plunked Shad.
A dinner fish dlnh should be broiled
or baked. Planked shad Is quite possi-
ble at home. Dry and seasoned cherry
wood planks arc to bo had at house
furnishing shops and the broiler on
most gas stoves is well adapted to this
kind of cooking. Sec that tho plank is
beveled on tho under side with two
crossplcces of wood. Split a shad up
the back reraovo the backbone cut oil
tho head and tall and season with salt
on both sides. Fasten the shad to the
plank with small thin nails butter It
well and broil under a pretty good
flame. In about thirty minutes remove
and serve on tho plank spread with
plain butter or better still with mat-
trod'hotel. A New Match Scrntcher.
At last has a way been found for the
tidy housekeopor to rid her walls of
that unsightly but necessary article a
match scratchor I'retty little pictures
tako their place but if you look closely
yon will see some clevor porson has
thought of the bright idea of combin-
ing tbo two. A quaint llttlo Dutch
scene is framed In passe partout and
some portion of the glass Is ground to
tho necessary roughnosa to Ignite tho
match. If It becomes marked It can
easily be wiped clean again with a
damp cloth. i

A Cold tn the Ilrnd.
A hydropathic troatment of a cold
in the head Is more reliable than any
other. It Is as follows In the morning
after rising and at night before retir-
ing wash the feet and legs as high up
as tbe knees in cold water then rub
them with a rough towol and nMssago
them till the skin Is red and glowing.
In addition to this cautiously snuff
tepid water up the nose frequently
during tbe day and sip with u tea-
spoon a glassful as hot as can be
borne an hour before each menl and at
bedtime. A few days Is often qultfc
eutlicleot for simple cases and obsti-
nate ones yield if the treatment is pro-
longed. No medicines are required.

otherwise become a severe case of
