' Curious Facta conosrnintt tho origin of
tho Nman
Why is a mayor called a mayor?
tnere is a rlddlo for you inC It eounda
lust as sensible as that moKt Mulish ot
all riddles: "Why 18 a awrisc- when It
pins?"
Here is ono explanation of why a
mayor Is called a major i.ong. long
years ago In England every year about
midnight on the first of May boys and
Brls ot each village used lo go in one
long procession to tho nearby wools.
On their way they blew horns and sang
many merry Maying songs. In tho
woods come of them cut a long May
pole a. tall slender supple tree. Others
fathered flowers as many as they could
carry. Then laden with flowers and
bearing tho May pole In state they
eame back to the village about day-
break. The May pole festooned with
flowers on the tip was planted In the
Village sreen. The doors and windows
! bf the village cottages weri decked
with flowers and every one prepared
for a gala day. About the green bay
booths were built where fcod was
terved. Every one was dressed In the
gayest clothes and wore flowers. There
Were bonfires and processions aud
dances and stage plays. A May queen
and often a king was chosen to be
roaster and mistress of the reremonlos
and the fun lasted till midnight and
often was continued tho next day and
Ihe next until six days were consumed
In merry-making.
But you say what has all this to do
With the mayor. Just this: The May
polo was left standing on the green all
the year and was the standard of
justice. Here tho people brought their
governors and barons and even kings
who had acted unjustly and deposed
them and disgraced them at the May
pole. Here the worthy governor or
Just ruler was given lawful power and
was called the mayor; you see it is but
a short cut from May to mayor
One or the funny customs on May
Cay was that of the MorrlB aanei.
Inere were eight of these dancers who
were white suits with strings of bMls
r intoned round their knees to make
music as they danced. With tho Morris
dancers were also a fiddler a clown a
..quire and a sword bearer. The swnrd
jearer carried a pword decorated with
ribbons and also a large cake in a
io:nd tin. He cut slices from Uio cake
to give to the bystanders. This cake
was supposed to bring good luck to
tiicse who had It and many creamed

Tussle with a Telephone.
"Number please!" The dulcet tones
ot the InWftsliflo "hello" girl trilled the
query into tfio waiting ear ot the wag
at the other end of the circuit
"Give me two pairs of aces" came
the answer.
"Do you think you'ro playing draw
poker?" Interrogated the girl at "Cen-
tral." "Certainly not" was the reply.
"I'm
calling a telephone number. Kindly
let me have four ones."
"I'm afraid I don't understand" said
the operator. "Can't you make your
call clearer?"
"I m doing the best I know how. Can
you connect me with one one one
one?"
"No I haven't; h.- in the book.
Maybe you specify It as eleven
oloven."
"Say do you think this Is a policy
shop? What number are you calling?"
"I'm trying to tell you. See Is you
can give me one hundred eleven one."
"No I can't" came the shary reply.
I have no time to wait If you cannot
be moro explicit you had better send a
telegram."
"Why do you have such nonsensical
uumbers in your old book If you can't
Understand then?" argued the caller.
"Here It Is as plain as day four ones
In succession."
