London July 18. While the stag-

likely to be an Interesting week aa
the trial of Karl Russell for bigamy
will be a unique event The oourt of-
ficials arc doing what they can to con-
vert It into a soeial function by sum-
moning peeresses to reserved seat
and laying stress upon the many small
points of etiquette.
Lord Uussell married in 1890 Mabel
the daughter of the late Sir Claude
Scott. A year Inter the young count-
ess Instituted proceedings for judicial
separation against the earl making
charge) against lilm of the most hor-
rible character which alie was oblig-
ed to withdraw in court.
Snmc time afterwards the countess
again appealed to '.he courts against
hor husband for restitution of conjir-
gnl right but without success.
Thereupon Lord Russell criminally
prosecuted his wife's mother Lena
Lady Scott for libel In connection
with the monstrous accusation which
sho persisted In circulating about
him. and the trial resulted In Lady
Scott's being condemned to six months'
Imprisonment.
Encouraged by this Lord Uussell
applied to the courts for n dissolu-
tion of his marriage on the ground of
"judicial cruelty" the cruelty having
consisted in the horrible charges made
against him by the countess. This ap-
peal wan denietl.
The earl then came to America es-
tablished a legal domicile In Nevada
and after having obtained u d'vorce
there proceeded to nm.ry Mrs. Som-
merville. He recently returned to
England with his second wife and an-
nounced bin in'enltou of making u
