'Now that the holldajs are over It
Topeka Kas. Jan. iT. Mrs. Car-
rie Nation otl a great flurry aniens
the joint keepers of Topeka tonight and
as a result knows what is to be badly
handled by a mob.
Mrs Nation arrived in Topeka at a 40
and Immediately hunted up a newspaper
reporter wlf.i the requset that she be
nhoWn some of the leading Joints of the
KV.
Two newspaper men volunteered to
pilot her around. Bhe said she did not
wlah to begin a smashing crusade but
wanted to talk with the Jolntlsts.
The keepers of the saloons had' been
npralsed of her Intentions and when she
arrived at Bd My era' Joint on Kansas
iiimuo she was confronted by the wife
of 'fiat Individual who rul.ied blow af-
ter blow on her head with a broomstick
wnlle Myers stood by and encouraged
the effort. By this time a crowd ef a
thousand people bad gathered among
whom were numerous oympeUiUerS of
Mrs Nation Nobody attempted to inter-
fere nnd soon the Jotntlst's wife step-
ped her assault Mrs. Nation said sho
was not hurt by her experience In the
leist.

Policeman Luster then appeared on
tho scene for the purpose ot protecting
Mrs Nation. Tie commended the mob
to stnnd back and started up the street
with Mrs. Nation alt the time followed
by hooting Jeering rowdies who were
sympathisers with the Joint keepers.
Mrs. Nation at last found refuge In
the editorial rooms of the Topeka Cap-
ital where the crowd was not allowed
to enter
Here sureunded by reporters and news-
paper correspondents she detailed the
story of her experiences and what sho ex-
pected to do in the future.
She Ssked an Associated Press corre-
spondent how many Joints there were in
Topeka. Qn lielne informed hat there
were moio than ono hundred she threw
up her hands In horror ami said the oon-
dlllon must not last any longer.
She added:
"I wniildfcgo out against those Joints
tonight If I had had some women to
go wltli me but I will rest for a day
or two. Something will be done yet
You may count on that "
Mrs. ' Nation then inquired where she
could go to swear out a warrant aga'nst
the wo.nnn who assaulted her.
Officer 1-uster who was Mesent. vol-
unteered to take her tr tljp city attor-
neys office where ahe could swear out
a warrant Mrs Nation readlfy assent-
ed and accompanied the officer on lUs
assurance that he would let nothing harm
her.
As Mrs. Nation and the policeman
stepped out of tlie front door ot the
Caolttil building the crowd which had
been waiting In the street surged toward
her
The policeman instantly drew his pis-
tol and shouted above the uproar.
"1 am here to protect this woman and
I will shoot tli eflret roan "who makes
a move toward her. Stand baok you
vintans "
The ruffians fell over eaoh other in
trying to get out of the way and Mrs.
Nation proceeded to the office of 'City
Attorney Qregga where a warrant was
sworn out
The crowd attempted to enter that
office building but vras stood off by the
officer with the drawn pistol.
Mrs aNtlon addressed the mob for a
few minutes and gave her attention. She
gave a logical explanation of her action
and said she was a law abiding eltlsen
who she raided a Joint as a Joint had no
rights.
She was then conducted to the place
where she was to spena the night. The
crowd was kept away from her by the
officers.
Mrs. Nation finds different conditions In
Topeka than the other Kansas towns
she has worked In Ch'of of Police
Stahl Is an ardent temperance worker
and he will order his officers to pjro-
tiot Mrs Nation from mob violence
whenever necessary
Tlie police Judge could not be found
tonight te sign the warrant for the ar-
rest of Sirs 11 y era and the matter will
rest until Monday when the woman will
be arrested
Mrs Nation inys she will prosecute
the Myers woman vigorously
Mrs. Nation Will deliver an address to-
merrow night In one c! the largest
churches of the city
Most of Joints hrre were closed all
the evvnlng tn the ex pacts Uon of mlds
by Mre. Nation.
Thero are some elegantly furnished sa-
loon here and tho owners did not want
Mrs. Nation to have a chnnco at the
furniture.
