ASHLAND WIS. AUGUST 4.-Piro to-
day destroyed a million dollars worth ot
property In tho lumber district of tho
city.
The names wero checked after threo
hours struggle bofore they reached the
valuable saw mills and ore docks along
the'water front.
Tonight tho flro broke out ugaln and
threatens further heavy loss.
At 1:30 p. m. fire broke out in the lum-
ber yards of Barker II. Stewart. It
spread rapidly to tho Keyistono Lumber
company's yards and in a short time hnd
destroyed nearly 50000000 feet of lumber
including six tramways. Carried by a
Strong wind tho fire brands started a
blazo in the lime salt and cement docks
a quarter of a mile away. Tho dock burn-
ed llko powder. It was a quarter of a
mile long and was soon reduced to ruins
together with a warehouse containing a
thousand dollars worth of merchandise
and several miles of railway track.
Four thousand pounds of dynamite was
brought to the sceno and distributed all
around the edge of tho fire zone.
Piles of lumber and scores of small
buildings were blown into atoms and the
flames oonflned. None of the great mills
has been destroyed. The loss is easily a
million dollars. Edward Hines said that
the loss of his firm alone was 800000
fully Insured.
At eight o'clock this evening the wind
which had steadily favored the fire fight-
ers suddenly veered towards the city
and developed Into a gale. Tho alarm
was sounded again and every available
piece of fire apparatus was brought Into
action but It appeared probably that the
mill of Barker & Stewart Durfeos mill
tho Ashland Iron and Steel company's
property and the Ohio Coal company's
dock would be destroyed.
At nine o'clock when It seemed that the
whole city was In great danger tho wind
suddenly veered again toward tho bay.
At ten o'clock the fire was checked ex-
cept In one place and there is good pros-
pect for checking that Tho flames havo
eaten to within forty feet of a long doub-
le row of lumber piles running directly to
the Keystone Lumber mill and If tho fire
gets into this the mill will go.

The result in the preliminary hearing of
Jim Canada for tho murdor of Frank
Johnson at Union City on July 17 was a
surprise to the friends of Canada. Judge
Grigsby turned Canada over to Sheriff
Crosby with instructions to keep him con-
fined in tho county jail until the next
meeting of tho grand Jury. Tho Judge
nt first fixed Canada's bond at $7000 but
at tho earnest request of Attorney J. J.
Carney he changed his mind and com-
mitted him to Jail without bail.
