Philadelphia June 20. The indorse-
ment of Woodruff for vice-president
by the New York delegation does not
eliminate Roosevelt from the situa-
tion. His friends are firmly convinced
that he will be nominated. Kansas
will present Governor Roosevelt's
name to the convention if no state
called before it does.
Senator Hanna is a very busy man
and his lieutenants say he will.control
the situation In every detail when he
gets ready to act.
The vie -presidential question is not
yet settled. The Ohio delegation met
this morning and adjourned until to-
morrow. ThiB shows that no agree-
ment has been reached by the Hanna
forces.

June 20. The Republican national
convention was called to order at 12:27
by Chairman Wolcott. Senator Lodge
of Massachusetts was named perma-
nent chairman and made a spaech on
the achievements of the Republican
party wh'ch was received with out
bursts of applause. The report of the
committaa on credentials was adopted
without debate.
The report of the committee on or-
ganization was pvesented by Grosve-
nor of Ohio and when Senator Lodge
was named for permauent chairman
there was loud cheering.
Charles W. Jonnson of Minnesota
was named for secretary.
There was another thunder of ap-
plause when Governor Shaw of Iowa
and Governor Rsosavelt.of Now York
were appointed to escort Senator
Lodge to the platform
The fift9en survivors of the first Re-
publican convention were presented
and heartily cheered. Resolutions of-
fered by these veterans were also
read.
Senator Chandler of New Hampshire
says nothing can prevent the nomina-
tion of Raosevelt for vice president.
The entrance of Senator Fairbanks
chairman of the committee on resolu
tions was tne signal tor more ap-
plause as it indicated that the plat-
form was completed. The platform
struck the keynote of the perty. It
referred to the financial and other
laws passed by the party and said
every promise was redeemed; that
prosperity was general and abund
ance followed; capital employed and
labor occupied; the administration of
McKinley was indorsed and all Repub-
lican principles upheld. The people
were asked to indorse the Republican
record.
It is probable that McKinley will
not be renominated this afternoon
and there is talk of a four days convention.

Hanna May Not Accept Roosey.
Philadelpeia June 21. At 12 o'clock
the vicepresidential question was
still unsolved. The Hanna man who
will down Roosevelt had not been se-
lected. Before night an agreement
must be reached if at all. It is not
likely that Hanna will accept Roose-
velt. It is not probable thajt President Mc-
Kinley will be re-nominated today.
The program for the days' session in-
cludes a number of very important
questions the consideration of which
will occupy all the available time.
The session will probably bo pro-
longed until late in the afternoon.
