The Gushing Horald has tho follow-
ing graphic account of an attomptod
hfcldup tho failure of which was duo
to tho plucky resistance of tha Intond-
cd victim :
"On last Wednesday morning as
'Squire bfcGorkel Mr. Stowcsand Mr.
Deetrick were leaving Stroud whore
they bad taken their cotton to sell a
heavy-sot man with sandy complexion
about 40 years old. who wore a heavy
seal ring with VoinltSal Gon lt.hailcd
Squire McCorLc.1 whose wagon wa8
behind the others and asked for a
ride stating that he was going out
about two miles to look at a claim
which bo was thinking of buying.
Mr. McCorkcl granted bis request atta
the man got up in tho seat with him.
In a little while they were overtaken
by a man in a light road wagon who
claimed to bo a mulo buyer lie drove
alougsiko tho wagon and engaged the
two men In conversation a&king them
If he knew of any mules which he
could buy. They drove along half a
mile when tho man in tho road wagon
asked McCorkel if ho cou'd change a
$20 bill for him. McCorkcl tald he
could and tho stranger handed him the
520 bill. McCorkel took out his pocket
book which contained 875 the proceeds
from his salo of cotton and was just
about to givo tho s'ranger change
when tho man In tho wagon with him
grabbed tho pockotbook and attempt-
ed to jump from tho wagon. McCor-
kel was too quick for him aod caught
him whon a struggle commenced. The
team becamo frightened and ran away
and while McCorkcl was trying to stop
them and hold the man too the rascal
toro himself loose and jumped to tho
ground. In tho mcantlmo the man in
tho road wagon had whipped up bis
horses and crossed tho road ahead of
McCorkcl and when tho robber got
loose be made straight for the road
wagon with McCorkcl at his heels
The men In tho wagon ahead heard
tho strugglo and Mat Deetrick came
quickly to tho assistance of McCorkel.
Ho succeeded in getting between the
robber and the road WHgon the owner
of which was a pal and accomplice of
the robber and after a vain attempt
to got together the robber agreed to
give up the pockotbook and money. As
tho robbers worn armed and McCorkel
was not ho agroed to do bo and whon
this was done tho robbers drove off.
In talking with Mr. Stowers wo ask-
od why nd attempt was amide to have
them followed and he said that un-
der the excitement they did not think
of It. McO-rkel thought only of get-
tine back his money which ho cer-
tainly would havo lost but for his
gritty fight with the robber.
