Oen. Ureely of the signal oorps Is
known to be a daring explorer a clever
writer and n good ofllcer but not until
a few days ago did the people become
aware that Oon. Oreely Is also a
humtrUU A little investigation into
tho work of the signal oorps revoaled
tho fact that of tho 1300 engaged in
that corps bttt Ave died of disease
during the Spanish American war
The signal eorpe men wore worked
day and night. The men bui t telo-
graph lines in tho belling heat of mid-
day at Camp Thomas Camp Algor at
Slbonoy Saetfazo and El Caney. They
wig-wagged their signals from the
hilltops while others were lolling in
the comforting shado cf the trees.
They were the first to cross swampB
anu wade streams. Yet the percentage
of deaths from disease in the signal
corps was less than among tho in-
fantry and artillery branches of tho
service.
When askod why this was Oen.
Ure6ly replied that it was probably due
to the fact that there were no surgeons
attached to tho signal corps for the
purpose of experimenting on the raon.
Tho signal corps carried its own uiedi-
clnes and the men doc'ored themselves.
Whon one fell sick he was nursed by
his comrades There woro no political
chief surgeons to quarrel about nulhor
ity and no red tape assistant surgeons
to mix up tho requisition blanks.
There were no sons ot thoir fathers
eonneoted with the commissary or
medical departments of tho signal
corps and tho signal corps men were
unbamporod. As a consequence they
survived their ordeals in better ihapo
than those branches of the army which
had all these things.
Whlio Oon. Oreely's reply is full of
quiet humor it is also full of hard
sense and If tho moral shall impress
itself upon tho powers that be at

glvo tho general for making light of

What Is the use of making a better
article than your competitor if you can
not get a better price for it?
Answer As there Is no difference In
the prico tho public will buy only the
better so that whilo our profits may
bo bmaller on a slnglo stle they will bo
much greater in the aggregate.
How can you get the public to know
your make is thu best?
If both articles aro brought promi-
nently before tho public both aro cer
tain to be tried and the public will
very quickly pass judgment on them
ai d u e only tho bettor one.
