"A brutal -majority" owned by Republicans added to
apathy and a general desire not to get to the polls defeated
Judge J. R. Keaton for congress and elected his Republican
opponent Dennis T. Flynti by a majority of which after the
official returns are in will reach 1000.
At the Republican central headquarters all kinds of claims
are being made for Flynn and Mr. Flynn himself says his plu-
rality will go easily 0000.
The election yesterday was a puzzle in many respects.
Moreover the fact is patent that the Republicans sacrificed
their county tickets in order to make gains for Flynn.
Tlure Z.XQ. p.evcrtl lessons to Democrats in this defeat.
Lack of harmony and aggression on the part of committees
is one.
The count of ballots is slow and returns arrive slowly. At
the present writing the Free Silver people will control the
legislature.
Up to 8 o'clock this afternoon county reports on the con-
gressional race give majorities for Flynn as follows :
It should be borne in mind that most of these estimates are
based on high Republican figures.

The election In the city yesterday
was quiet but busy. Tho roto polled
was hardly up to the registration.
The stay at Nome rote defeated the
Silver ticket. Republicans at the poll-
ing places committed frauds innum-
erable and the election laws were
boldly violated. Tho vote in tho dif-

The Slay at Home

MESSRS JONES
And PoBBibly Smith Aro Elected By Good Jlnjorltles There
Aro Eight Townships In This County Yot
to ho Hoard From.
At the time the Leader goes to press all the townships
have made returns but eeven. These are Orlando North and
South Mulhall. Oak View Spring Creek Iowa North and South
Cimarron. The vote in these townships will not materially
change the general result. Edgar W. Jones for county attorney
is elected by considerable over 200 majority and should his
vote in these townships compare with that of others whose
vote has been reported his majority may reach If not
exceed 1100 The vote on county clerk is very close. The vote
as counted at the silver party's headquarters up to 8 p. m. shows
Charley Herwig leading Morton 8B votes with eight precincts to
hear from. It is not believed that these light precincts will be
able to overcome this majority and it is fair to rjcalculate that
Herwig'a election hi safe by a very small majority. Indeed it Ih
reasonable to presume that he will hold his own If lib does not
get a majority at Mulhall and Orlando. In the second commis-
sioner's district Miles "W. Allen ran ahead of his ticket but it is
found ho is defeated by a small majority. In the third district
Mr. Lovell is probably defeated while in the first the Republi
cans have such a large majority there never was much hope that
Mr. Stiles could carry it. Dr. Kendall for representative Is
certainly elected by a handsome majority in the 18th district.
The 17th district was hopuless from the start and this fact
Mr. Joseph "Wisby aud his friends recognized at the start. The
friends of Mr. Soule were very sanguine that he would carry
the 9th district for the council and his defeat was a surprise to
them as well as to the Republicans. Calvert Oldham Keyser
Dick Smith and the rest of the ticket were beaten by majori-
ties running from the hundreds down.
The negro vote split mostly on Edgar W. Jones but had it
gone to the other candidate as it did to him the result would
have upset the Republican calculations and most of the county
free silver ticket would have been elected.
