CRACK SHIPS TO BE
(Continued from
be left in European waters re-establishing the European sta-
tion which wag deserted at the outbreak of the War.
Some of the ships of the ileet will proceed on to the Philip-
pines to replace such ol Dewey's ships as it may be necessary
to 9end home for docking nnd repairing.
The Oregon and Massachusetts and the cruisers New York
and Brooklyn with possibly the Columbia and Minneapolis
will form the nucleus ol the lleet. It has not been fully de-
termined what ships will compose the European lleet but it is
understood that some of the smaller cruisers will be attached
to that staliou. The Oregon will probably proceed on to the
Philippines as it has been decided to place one of the big battle-ships
it not two in the Pacific waters in view of the requir-
inents of the United States In that part of the world.
It is quite likely that the Texas willjoin Sampson's lleet for
the trip in as much as she will be in excellent condition. It is
doubtful If any of the auxiliary cruisers will accompany the
lleet as was contemplated when Commodore Watson was
placed In command ot the eastern squadron.
This exprditioe is wholly contingent upon the establishment
of peace which it is so confidently believed is now at hand.
Should there be a Blip up however in the negotiations a hos-
tile fleet will go across the Atlantic bent on destruction. It is
not believed now that there will be any need of making a na-
val demonstration to force the Madrid Government to accent
our terms of peace and Commodore Watson's lleet may only be
known in history as having been organised.
Commodort Schley it is said will be given an Important
command when the navy is reorganised on a peace basis as it
is stated aUne Navy Department that there is no intention of
slighting him in the least. Should Commodore Watson be as-
signed to ttie command ot the European station It Is quite prob-
able that the command of the North Atlantic lleet would fall
upon Schley.
A naval otlicer in authority said today that it was still a
matter of speculation as to who would be placed in command of
the different squadrons as the consideration of the question
has not yet reached a definite stage.
