private secretary announced
positively lhat the bombard-
ment began at noon conveying
the impression that official ad-
vices to that effect had been re
ceived. Later however when
the war department was asked
when a copy of the official dis-
patch would be made public it
was declared that no dispatch
was received although Hiey
said there was no doubt the
bombardment had already com-
menced. A prominent senator
slated that all arrangements
had besn made to begiu the
bombardment at 12 o'clock and
it would occur as scheduled.
