squadron Is to leave this afternoon In -
chase after ! sIpaalaTniii and It la hop-
ct) that Oommodore Schley will nnd them
bottled up In the harbor of Santiago
The flying iquadren It now one of the
strangest aggregations of fighting ships
ever gathered together. It consists of the
first class armore. cruiser Brooklyn.
Commodore Schley's flagship; the bntlle-
ships Massachusetts Iowa and Texas
the cruiser Warblchead the gunboat Ctts-
tlne nnd the torpedo boat Hunont. It has
a. plentiful supply of coal and can si i
for a tong time at sea. The men an
not ontv anxious but eager to fight
and they expressed great satisfaction at
learning the whereabouU of the enetm s
fleet.
A close examination was made of the
harbor of eienfuegos lost night Borne
concern Is felt for the Scorpion which
lert here last iHght to toko despatches to
tho cruiser Minneapolis at Santiago The
despatches of Commodore Schley are In
typher and cannot lie read if cnpturnl
About noon the British shirt Adubt
bound from Kingston. Jimaba with or-
ders from U. S. Consul Det to bring off
refugees from Clenfuegos wi h hslled. nnd
Captain Walker said he had wen thi
Spanish fleet at Santiago de Cuba on the
previous Thursdav but understood It was
bound for Clenfuegos. The Adula pro-
ceeded and Commodore Schley wob In-
clined to believe that the Spanish squad-
ron bad got behind thu bills In a bond
of tho harbor so that a thorough Inves
tigation might be made If the fleet Is
there it la caught like a rat In a trap
If not. then Commodore Schley will go
east.
Tuesday morning SHU off Clenfuegos
(I am sending this by one of the Asso-
ciated Press despatch boats.)
The flying squadron was reinforced this
morning by the addition of the cruiser
Miirblehead nnd tho gunlioot Kagle It
was lying off the heritor and the arrl nl
of those two ships may assist In solving
the question of what bj concealed In the
deep harbor wlilrh lies at the nd of n
long and tortourous channel nurrow
enough at places to prohibit an entrain n
bch.g made by a boat except In single
columns The Information given by Hu
refugts It to the effect that there are 21
mines laid in this channel all contiu t
mines When they Wvre ortgtnully laid
the Intention was to set them off bj
tlectrlclty but there was some failure
and they were changed to explode by
contact. It Is also said that there um
sixteen gunboats of tho enemy In the
harbor and many thousands of Spunlnli
troops on shore.
A clear view of the harbor la not avail-
able from the American ships and It Is
iH.ssible thut the Spanish fleet Is far In-
Hble This would be a much more advantage-
ous plum to land supplies and troops
than Santiago because of the fact thut
tlnn Is a railroad connection with Ha-
vana while Santiago Is cut off by the In
surgents.
