Tho position la taken by Dr. Mc-
Uurnpy in Hit. London Medical Notvs.
Hint there Is really no medical euro for
ippcndlcltlB even though somo cases
recover without operntlor. Ho consid-
ers too though appendicitis la 4 sur-
gical disease yet operation may not bo
neceesnry In every case tho fact being
that this ailment is n stoppago of tho
dralnago from the appendix to tho co-
lon and preliminary treatment Is of-
ten worse than uaeles. TIiub tho
opium treatment relieves pain and dis-
comfort but entliely masks the symp-
toms at a most Important time for It
Is In the first twenty-foui hours from
the beginning of the attack that phy-
sicians can decide not only as to the
diagnosis but as to the result and
cause probably of the caae. If for In-
stance thoro Is no Increaso In urgency
In five or alx hours the patient la not
In Immediate danger If kept at perfect
rent In bed; on the othor hand If In
tvelvo hours there Is still no increase
In tho severity of tho symptoms the
patient should begin to Improve. But
If the urgency of the case has steadily
Increased In twelve hours from tho
time when tho diagnosis was made an
operation will probably bo called for.
After two attacks a patient Is sure to
have a third and each attack rendors
operation more difficult and dangor-
ous; all tho advantages Ho In the op-
eration between tho attacks and In an
operation during an acute attack the
prognosis la worse.

M the time or the groat billiard of
1S88 from which New Yorkers still
date events that city had but a single
tt'emlor cord of connection with the

which crosses the IStist river on the
Brooklyn brldgo runs undci ground to

land storms. Boston was nearly as
bail off as Now York and the news-
papers of the two cities made fnintlr
efforts to get word from tbo rest of
tho country. At lnat a New York
newspaper hit upon the plan of cabling
to Boston In way of Ixjndon. A mes-
sRjro was thtreforo sent by the Com
mercial lino to London and forwarded
by tho othor cable of tho sanio com-
pany to Cnpe Ann where this oablc

tunately thoro was a wlro between
Ompe Ann and Boston that had no

CROSS AND CRESCENT.
Russian Sulillcr Uolluve They Aro lruted
to Clirlktlnnlia Turkey.
All the wars that have beon waged
by Russia against tho Turks have do
far as the soldlors of the Russian
nrmy wero concerned had a religious
inspiration. Tho Idea that tho cross
will again take the placo of tho cres-
cent on tho summit of tho dome of
the groat mosquo of St. Sophia nt Con-
stantinople Is firmly Implanted in tho
mind of every Huaulnn. And Just as
firmly ho bellovo that It is -tho mis-
sion of Russia to plant It thoro. Evory
Russian regards It as the manifest
destiny of his country and though the
day when Russian hands will tear
away the crescent and substitute tho
cross may bo dolaycd ho Is convinced
that it Is only a quostlon of time whon
the voice of the muezzin from tho
minaret calling the faithful to prayer
will bo hoard for tho last time. When
tho Russian army under the command
of tho Grand Duke Nicholas tho
brothor of Kmperor Alexandor II. ar
rived bofore Constantinople in tho
spring of 1878 ho sent two tolograms
to St. Petersburg one reporting the
fitato of tho army tho other somewhat
in tho following language. "My army
Is In sight of the minarets of St. So-
phia; wo can tako tho city with tho
loss of 7000 mon." To tho first ho re-
ceived the usual acknowledgment; to
the second thoro came no roply. It
was by this understood that tho cm-
peror did not sanction tho enterprise
for it would have been a breaoh of his
pledgo to Europe. In the army thero
was great disappointment and more
than one ot tbo Russian gonerals Sko-
beloff at tholr hoad expressed their
anger so forcibly that tho Russian ar-
my wos withdrawn and put boyond tho
roach of temptation. But tho fooling
remained in overy man's mind that
tho next time a Russian army came
to Constantinople it would be to stay.
