HISTORIC QUEBEC.

From Quebec a correspondent wrltos
to the PnrlB Messenger: "Icl on pnrle

city. Strolling in lower Quebec you
might easily faney youraolf In Amiens

Is more Kngllsh but everywhere an
amusing mixture. On tho same card
you will read "Malson n louer." "House
to let;" on ono side of the door "Pas
d'admlssfon sans affaires" and on tho
other "No admittance except on busi-
ness." This bilingual necessity causes
a little extra painting and printing.
Each railway crossing must be marked
likewise. "Traverse du chomln tie fer"
and every ofllclol "notice" must be
printed also in full as an "Avis." The
blending Is often curious as when two
adjoining shops have their announce-
ments one in French and the other in
English. Along the Orando Alle run
ning right nrross the Plains of Abra-
ham you might be in Brussels or
Paris only that Clifton terrace seems
to recall yon to Kensington. Ameri-
can travelers for whom Europe Is too
distant are advised to go to Quebec
there to And a bit of the mediaeval old
world transplated to tho new but still
embalmed in its ancient religious sen-
tlmentalism upon which the rush and
roar of modern unrest produce as little
effect as the Atlantic breakers on the
cliffs of Cape llreton. French con-
tinues uppermost until you pass Mon-
treal but from Ottawa and Kingston
to the Pacific the legend of the nearly
universal tongue is like that of the
Paris shopkeepers who announced
"English and American spoken." In
most of tho best schools ISnglish Is
taught and a large number of the peo-
ple are conversant with both lan-

Imagine a clerk trying to sell an
article to his own "boss" and netually
accomplishing it. and winning an In-
crease of salary as a reward ! That la
what happened recently in ono ot tho
branch stores of Llplon the groat
English grocer and provision dealer.
Mi' has so many clerks that some ot
i hem do not know him by sight. It
was one of these latter who eallod Mr.
Upton's attention to a line specimen
of poultry as he wss walking through
one of his stores and the clerk was so
earnest and adroit In explaining his
wares that finally the customer or-
dered It sent to his residence. When
the address was given the energetic
derk and he found that lie nau been
pressing the goods upon his own em-
ployer he nearly had a fit but soon
recovered upon being Informed that
bis assiduity had earned him an In-
crease of pay. Merehants' Revlaw.
