The HCdlovemelf j has often been re-
terred to of the carrying of steamboats
on the backB of men. The expression
Is not quite accurate for the Congo
natives are trained from Infancy to
carry burdens on their heads. When a
Huropenn nn tho lower Congo sent his
black boy to a store to buy some cig-
arettes ho was surprised to see the
bcrvnnt return with the tiny package
on his head. When a Congo woman
has smoked her much-lovod pipe the
treasuro Is likely to repose on her head
until she again requires It; and If her
husband unfortunately has been able
to procure a bottle of nun. he walks
home with It nicely balanced on his
head throwing stones at the strsy dogs
and cats In his way. without the
slightest Idea that he la reallv an ex-
pert equilibrist Most or the many
thousands of pieces of steamboats were
carried on the heads and not on tho
backs of men.
The 60000 natives of the lower Congo
who have been carrying these steam-
boats and all other freight around the
cataracts are tho very men who could
not be Induced eighteen years ago to
give a helping hand to Mr. Stanley.
He wished to carry 1830 man-loads
and ho had only 100 Zanzibar and Uo-
nngo porters for the work. Some of
the natives would sell him a little of
their timo but they would not carry
his goods more than two or three miles
oeyond their homes. Stanley's failure
to secure tho carriers he needed aloug
the river delayed his work on the up-
per Congo ror more than a yenr and
the labor question was the most per-
Vlexlng problem with which he had to
deal. He brought his carriers thou-
sands or miles from Zanzibar and oth-
er coasts of Africa.- Harper's Hound
