Causon Nov. 2?ov. Itt Tlio entlro
state wns sturtlotl nnd shocked nt tlio
murder Into yostorduy attarnoon of
Charles A. Jonos United Status dls-
triot attorney by Julian Oulnnn tlio
10-year-old sou of a well known local
pliysialnn.
At first It was supposed thnt Jones
had committed suidlde but no weapon
bolng found on his person or noar tho
scono of tlio shooting it beenmo evl-
ilout that his death hnd boon caused
by another and nn hour later young
(luluan surrendered hlmsali at tho
shcriirs ofllce nnd confessed to tho
killing.
Tho statement of tho youth who is
now in Jail is to the etroct tliat im-
mediately prior to tho shooting' ho
hnd observed his sister talking to
Jonos with whom ills father had
forbidden association when ho saw
Dr. Guinnn approaching llcllcvlng
trouble to bo lnoritablo when tho two
men should moot tho boy procured a
Winchester rillo and stationed himself
at a window for tho purpose as ho
nys of protecting his father.
Upon encountering Jones Dr. Oui-
linn said to him: "Tills is tho Inst tlmo
I shall ever wnrn you against keeping
company with my daughter."
Jones jeered nt tho doctor in com-
ment upon this warning and slipped
his hutid into his right hnnd pocket
Julian stntos that having heard his
father threaten to kill Jonos. nnd hav-
ing been informed tliat tho district at-
torney always carried a rovolver
which ho believed from Jones' motion
was ubout to bo drawn tho boy ilred
at Jonos in anticipation of nn attack
upon his father.
Jones foil forward doad tho bullet
from tho riflo having entored above
thu right eye and passed out nt tho
ncok behind.
Miss Guinnn seeing Jones fall
threw horself upon him and embraced
tho dead body.
When tlio eoronor took ohnrgo of
the remains Jones' hand wns still in
ins pocket but no weapon was found.
Jones wns about 31 years old was
married and loft a widow and a child
ut his home In lleno whence ho cams
yeterduy morning on otlleial busi-
ness. Ho was necessarily in Carson a
part of his tlmo and Whilo hero his
attentions to tho girl occasioned so
much talk that Dr. Ouinau had been
aggravated into making tho throats
agnlust Jones which indirectly led to
the murder by tho doctor's son.
ABOUT KEY WEST.
Mrs. Kaek Will Take tlio Stand Against
Martin Thorn.
Nmv Your Nor. 10. Emanuel
Frlond eounsul for Mrs. Augusta
Knok announced Inst night that his
dltont had mado a full confession nnd
would go on tho wituovi stand to-day
against Thorn. Ho would glvo no
furthor particulars.
I Until yesterday sho hnd not uttered n
ford that would '.r.arituiuntu herself.
Sho hnd withstood tho efforts mado by
tho police to o.vtort from her an ad-
mission that sho hnd killed Wlllinni
Quidcnsuppe or that she had planned
hts death nnd lured him to Woodstde
L. I. whoro Martin Thorn actually
did the shooting.
Tho woman had been subjected to
tho thirty-third degroo by tho police
to every known method of torment.
Sho had beon confronted with tho
horrid masses of llesh; sho hnd beon
coaxed wheedled nnd threatened.
Tlio promlso of life hnd boon hold out
to her as a reward for a few words
that would surely result In Thorn's
execution. Sho had remained firm
during her imprisonment nt police
headquarters. At all hours of tho day
and night sho had been besieged but
she hnd kept her own counsal.
Now sho confesses by wlint direct
inlluonec is not known.
The story thnt Mrs. Nuck has told
and that sho will bo callod upon to re-
pent to the jury is full of dramatic In-
terest. Sho lias described at grcnt
length her lifo with Guldonsnppo In
the little flat on Ninth avenue nonr
Thirty-fourth street Sho qunrrolcd
with him frequently nftor Thorn tip-
pun red on the scone fluldousuppe was
violent nnd to rid themselves of him
sho nnd Thorn determined to kill
him. Sho induced htm to go to
Woodslde to Inspect a cottage which
sho had hired ns sho told him to con-
duct her business ns a midwife. Sho
sent him upstnlrs alone nnd when sho
hoard shots sho knew that Thorn had
enrrlcd out his promlso.
Tho greatest dllllcnlty was to oblit-
erate tho traces of murder The only
plan that appeared safe and sure was
to cut tho remains into fragment
tmiill enough to bo enrtod away with-
out suspicion. When the packages
had beon prepared Mrs. Nnek nnd
Thorn hirod n surrey in this city and
drove to Woodsldo. They throw somo
ot their bundles in o tho East river
but were tlion f righ oncd by tho ap-
proach of dock linuds on tho ferryboat
md they drovo on until thoy found nn
unfrequented spot to leave what re-
mained. The discovery of tlio body
was followed within a few days by
her arrest.
Only Southern City Never Under the
L'ouffMlerato ring.
A mnn who recently returned Iron
Key West Kla. says tin finrt impres-
sion a Btninger gotB of that place nt
tho present time is that tho ctty has
gono on a ptrpotual holiday spree.
Hunting Hies from almost nvery house-
tov. and tho colors are ubout evenly
diviued between "Old Ulnry" and the
omblem of the Cubttn rmublle Peo-
plo ot all classes and ags wear pins
or other symbols bearing thr motto
"Cuba Libre" says the lluffalo Courier.
This far southern citr lylnj? almost
within the tropics is the only town of
importance below Mason and Dixon's
line that was never under the stars
and bars of the confederacy. The pop-
ulation is about evenly divided be
tween white Cubans ctolored Cubans
and white Hahau.'-.ne. There are not
more than a score of real American
families restdont on the island but not-
withstanding this fact the great mass
of the peoplo are loyal to the union
first nnd to Cuba next. It is curious
though truo that ot All the homes
dwellings stores hotels and other
buildings that dot the island from one
share to tho other not one ct them
has a chimney or anything .bat will
answer the purpose of a cblmney.
llatulsomo residences and lowly hovels
are alike in this respect and from an
eminonce gating out over acrts of roofs
on all sides ono is strode with tho want
of something to complete the symme-
try of the picture. Wood and coal
or fuel of any kind are nn unknown
quantity as the tropical atmosphere
furnishes nil tho heat required nnd
for cooking purposes sticks if carbon
are used which are sold by peddlers
who hawk their wnros about the
streets. There aro few stores ns wo
understand such things nnd no tnnr-
kets. Sign bonrds In Spanish will toll
you where the barber shop is locatoJ
or wlu e to buy coral ornaments.
There are no more than half a dozen
stores conducted on tho American
plan on the Island. Instead nt a mar-
ket thore Is a dally miction under the
government dock where ovrythlng In
the way of provisions furniture nnd
fruit Is knocked down to the highest
bidder. Itananns alligator pears and
pineapples are tho commonest articles
of purchase and hero ships from Ja-
maica Cuba and Nassau In the Uahn-
miis unload their cargoes and dispone
of them at ruluoug rntos rather than
risk a voyage nt this time of year to
more northern ports.

A Matter Sun
It was once believed by somo as
(ronotners thnt the entire starry uni-
verse revolved around a center of at-
traction and the slar named Alcyone
In the beautiful group of tho IMolndos
was selected by the Qermnn nstrono-
med Maedler as marking that great
center. It hns long been known how-
ever that Mnedler'B conclusion which
was based on the apparent motions ot
the stars was Incorrect and It any
universal center exists it has not yet
been discovered. In fast many stars
seem to be moving In straight lilies
some In one direction nnd some In an-
other; and among these la our own
sun. Hut It Is possible that further
observations will show that all the
stars are really moving In curved
linen. In tbe meantime It has been
found that there art certain grops or
sets of stars which appear to travel
together. To what set it any the sun
belongs we do not yet know but quite
intely Monsieur Delnuney has pre-
sented before tho Academy of Sciences
In I'arlB reasons for thinking thnt
those stnrs whose distances hnve been
measured (that is to say those which
aro nearest to us) group themselves
around Slrlus the dog-stnr In a man-
ner similar to that In which the Inner
plnnets nre grouped around the sun
If this Is correct Slrlus may possibly
he tho master sun to which our orb of
day Is a distant sntollltc.
