Nmv Your Oct 9L In a letter to a
Genntui-Attiorlean political club
Henry George candidate for mayor
defined his viows on various matters
as follows: "1 do not believe In any
excise In any form. The attempt to
prevent peoplo from drinking by taxes
and excises upon liquor Increases cost
promotes adulteration and defeats I
think tho vory end it has in view.
All such taxes are promotive of mo-
nopoly and corporations. llosldes
what goos to tho government from
them a much lnrgor amount is taken
by private partlos who find profit In
the maintenance of the taxes. As was
the ease with our whisky tax also it
Is with nil taxes of that nature. The
dilllculty Is not to Institute them but
to repeal them. Llconsos nnd tnxs
have always Instituted and always
must Institute nn element of corrup-
tion which Is made to furnish moans
by which political rings maintain
themselves. I am a free trader In tho
full use of the term and would put
everything upon the basis of equal
rights. 1 think that the province of
the government is to prevent one in-
dividual from Interfering with the
equal rights of another. As to the
quostlon of Sunday closing I be-
lieve in individual freedom. Those
persons who wish to go to church on
Sunday should not be interfered
with In any wny by a person who
wishes to sell or drink liquor on Sun-
day mid the person who wishes to
drink or soil liquor on Sunday should
not Iks interfered with by the tho por-
son who wishes to go to church. Tho
Sabbath was made for man and not
man for the Sabbath. The law should
merely seo to it that liquor soiling Is
conducted In decency and in order.
A man's conduct should be govurnod
olely by his own conscience so long
as he preserves the public pence."

The mob was poorly organised and

mailed by Sheriff Hyner and Ills depu-
ties and assistants that they would
aot get the prisoners.
liver since the arrest of Foley In No-
rember IHtlo for the murder of his
mother and sister on their farm near
Liberty there has been recurring and
Intermittent talk of lynching him.
Ho was tried lately Imt the Jury failed
to Hgreo nnd It was freely said In Clay
oounty then thut his acquittal would
in rely lmrn resulted in his lynching.
Wade shot and killed A. Shammell a
former neighbor In the eastern part
if the county last month.
The motto of the mob seemed to bet
"There are too many murders hero
nnd no ono being punished fur them."
Foley and Wade were badly fright-
ened and called loudly from their
cells for protection.
Mr llyner the sheriff's wife Is the
heroine of tho attack. She secured
the hoys to tho jail from her husband
nnd put thorn In hor pocket and defied
the mob to get them. She wanted to
talk to the mob but her husband re-
ittaincil her.
With thu exception of u handker-

upper inrt of his fnce none of the men
were disguised. The officers will not
idinlt that they recognized any mem-
bers of the mob though undoubtedly
they did aH they knew nearly every-
body in tho county. Foley said to-
lay that ho heard ono name called
and ho know the voice of another man
but further than that ho would make
