custom to which they are not so Inrtls-
solubly bound by vanity that they must
forever cling to it. And the ery tint-
ural wish to retain one's reason has
been the moans of abolishing the steel
hairpin. The head aigue the scien-
tists who have made a study of this
matter Is the most sensitive portion ol
a woman's anatomy and the one which
iho frequently abuses the most violent-
ly. Sho Is quite likely to fix upon a
nerve center ns the permanent spot for
doing her coils of hair or persistently

which should bo kept free from the

it any wonder then continue the phy-
sicians. Hint women should have be-
come constitutionally rattle-brained
that their reasoning power should he
far Inferior to that of men and that
thousands of them should be com-
mitted to madhouses every yoar?
These cases are calamities not invaria-
bly referred to their proper causes and
It Is safe to say that n vory large pro-
portion of them are attributable to the
deadly hnlrpin. When women wero
first confronted with tho statement of
their unconscious sinning against
themselves they asked a trifle Indig-
nantly r what could tuko the placo of a
hairpin if it were once abolished.
Surely It would ho lmposslblo for self-
respecting women of middle ago to
parade the streets with their scanty
hair in pigtails. This was admlttod
and for a time tho matter did look
rather dubious. It was Biiggoetod that
all women might cut off their hair and
wear it In nhort loose curls. This
again did not appeal to tho dlgnilled
majority and so tho following com-
promise was finally hit upon. Accord-
ing to thla scheme the hair was to bo
combed loosely back from the forohead
pompadour style. Al tho hack It was
to be arranged In a loose yet cleverly
arranged knot and caught In place with
a Blngle two-pronged blunt-edged shell
comb. Whon tried this arrangement
was found to work admirably. Tho
absence of steel hairpins made head-
aches more and more Infrequent and
tho dally coiffure a delightful and glee-
fully anticipated proeoss. On the other
hand tho presence of tho shell comb
was hardly vi ..Iconhle and contributed
not at nil to v tho wenrer's discomfort
And flnnlly tho new method was found
to bo more becoming than any colffuro
that had been devised In years. It will
undoubtedly be adopted by thousands
of women who will rejoice to excludo
the steel hairpins from their homes
