"The History of Alcohol" and began
by (ixplalnlng the utilverml prevalence
of stlnuilntlng or narcotic drugs as
ohowlng the universal cmvlng of man-
kind for something to hldo the trlnls

Illustrated the drinking habits of the
ancient Egyptians with r curious col-
lection of Inn'oru slides. Tho habits
end customs of nnctent Greece anno
next nnd the worship of tho great god
Dionysus or llncchus -ras Illustrated
by some splendid photographs of
vnses. statuos nnd bas-reliefs. Their
wine was drunk diluted never stronger
than half wator and frequently with
two four or even fifteen parts of tho
milder fluid. Mention was made of the
curious nature of their wines the ad-
mlxturo of honey and spices or rosin
snd turpentine even of salt water and
the question of fermented nnd unfer-
ineiited wines among thorn and the an-
cient Hebrews. The use of wine among
the more hordy and less civilized Mace-
donians was loss refined and the ex-
ploits of Philip and his son Alexander
rivalled the tales told by the most ar-
dent prohibitionist. At the feast given
by Alexander at tho tomb of Cyrus a
prlzo was offered for tho boldost
drinker nnd Uie victor Promachus
credited with fourteen quarts of wine
died In thrco days' time from the effects
of Uls debauch along with some fifty of
his competitors. Karly Homo was de-
scribed as painfully temperate espe-
cially for the fair' sex who were sen-
tenced to death for touching wine. It
was sad to hear that kissing on tho
mouth was Invented by tho Roman
husband to test his wlfo's abstinence
from the wine cask. loiter however
after Greece and the Knst wore con-
quered wine llowed freely and the
later republicans vied with the sub-
jects of tho early emperors in gross
nnd unbridled drunkenness.
The capacity of tho Roinnn must

was knighted by tho Emporor Claudius
under the title of Trlconglus. or "three-

gle draught of his.
New-England came In for a touch
from the lecturer. It was somewhat
surprising to heart that In the first
call for supplies sent home by tho
Plymouth Day colonists the famous
up peal headed by "ministers" tlioro
were elong with requests for barley
rye and wheat for seed and stores of
fruit troes a petition for "vyne

In 1G28 ami his ship was furnished
with "45 tuns loero I! tuns eannrle 20
gallons aqua vltae" nnd only 6 tuns of
wator.
Tho lecture closed with a short de-
scription of the last century charac-
terized by tho growth and development
of the temperance movement. Some
fine illustrations were given from
Crulkslinnk's powerful plates of "Tho
Bottle." and a comparison of tho drink-
lug habits of both the educated and un-
educated classes of the present day as
compared with thoso of a hundred or
even fifty years ago showed the great
advuuee of the present civilization.

MAKING CLOUDS AND RAIN.
Uijifrliiirnt 'J'lmt Illulr.li-t UiiV Whole
.(iii-uu Circulation
It anybody would like to produce
clouds and rain on a small scale It Is
easy to do so. according to Professor
L. Krrara who describes tho process
In Clel et Torre. He advises thut the
experiment bo made with a cylindrical
vase of Bohemian glass about eight
Inches In height and flvo Inches In
dlamoter. It should he filled half full
of strong alcohol about 02 per cent
pure covored with a porcelain saucer
nnd warmod in a hot wntor bath. It
must ho warmed for quite a while so
that tho liquid vase and cover may
attain n high temperature without
bringing the alcohol to the boiling
point. Then the whole should be re-
movod to a wooden tuble taking caro
not to ngltato the fluid and results
may bo awaited. The warm liquid will
continue to send up an abundance of
alcoholic vapors. In a few minutes the
porcelain covor will be so far cooled
that the vapors nearest to It will begin
to condense and thus very clearly vis-
ible clouds will be formed. Presently
these clouds will bogln to revolve
themselves Into tiny droplets of rain
which will fall vertically Into the
liquid. There will bo countless num
bers of these raindrops and the inter-
esting spectacle may go on for a half
hour. At first the vapors will n-e
qulto Up to the porcelain coer hut
as the whale cools the condensation
will occur at a lower level Then
there will be h perfectly clear zone
above tho cloud xone and natine will
be exactly reproduced except that in
tho place of water everything Is made
ot alcohol. The clear spare above will
represent the pure sky below which
are the clouds condensing Into rain
which Is roturned to the liquid rep-
resenting the ocean from which It
came. Thus this experiment Illus-
trates in miniature the whole aqueotiv
limitation ot the atmosphere.
