A Story of tho l'D'iirli Uetnlullim.
At the time of the French Revolu-
tion Houdou tho celebrated French
sculptor (whose statue of Voltulre we
have all admired In the foyer of the
Theater Francals) was thrown into
prison. Mine. Houdon in despair
went to Hurras and with streaming
uts implored his assistance. Barras
shouk his head; he feared he could do
nothing. Houdon was it man of genius
and therefore as David was one of the
condemning Judges he feared then-
was lKlle chance for his saUation
Mine. Houdon refusing to accept this
opinion as final and using all the art
and begullomenta of which an astute
French lady Is capable Bnrras at lHHt
condescended to ask her If her husband
had any statue for sale at thut time
in his studio. Madame replied that
th only finished statue at present In
his atellor was a figure of Saint Sehol-
astlco holding a scroll of MS. In hei
hand.
On hearing this the wily Barms rang
the bell and said to his answering sec-
retary: "M. Houdou has Just com-
pleted a splendid statue of 'Philosophy
Meditating on the Revolution.' Ilasum
and purchase this sublime work of art.
u'ld have it placed In the Assembly."
Barras' orders wore carried out with
the result that not only was the sculp-
tor's life spared but he received more
commissions for statues than he was
able to execute. On such small issues
did the lives of men hung in those tre-
mendous times.
