Tiik fellows who are fijrhting Uunt

trouble. Ewing's regent record proper-

frantic efforts of Thomas Reed and

DisrATCHKS from Washington say
that large numbers of congresimcn

dallying tactics of Reed in tariff legis-
lation. Tho houBo meets but three
times a week noyy and then is in ses-
sion only tvo or three hours.
-iT hqaid that W. 8. FioldB of Okla-
homa la slated for assistant Indian
commissioner. Lot blm be appointed
at once. The people aro heartily tired
of tho present assistant commissioner
the egotistical Tom Smith. When
Smith goes so goes Agent Freeman
the bdlicoBO tyrant of the Osage
domain.
Wx aro not surprised that the tnut-
terlngs of tho people have finally pen-
etrated the commltteo rooms whore
tho senate tariff revisionists are ni
work. Naturally the protests com')
from thoso who aro tho most directly
affected by tho removal from tho" free
list of the materials which havo proved
such a boon to industry and labor by
making it possible for American manu-
facturers to competo with tho f jrelgn-

gests tho splendid results of a rational

The Galveston Tribune nominates
Mr. Tom Richardson of Houston for
appointment by the president toreprc-
t;nt this country in tho Paris Inter-
national exposition in 19C0. The nom-
ination Ib a most excellent one. Tue
Lkadkh froja knowledge of Mr. Rich
ardsou's enterprising and representa-
tive character his ability as an organ-
izer and aa a loyal supporter of all
western enterprises heartily seconds
the Tribune's remark when it says:
"Ills indefatigable enorgy his quick In-
telligence and his personal popularity
throughout the west together with
his experience for Boveral years pecu-
liarly fit him for the position lie or
ganized the Western congress tho

prehension of ibe subject."

Delegate Callahan and alleges that
"Callahan has quietly btolen away for

Washington assorted that he would
return to Oklahoma about the first of
May to adjust some business matters
which required his personal attention.
From prirate letters Tiik Laoeu
learns that our delegate is now en-
route to Oklahoma from Washington
and expects to remain here two weeks
at least. lie ha not "stolen away" as
Fleming would have it bt seeing
that the body of which ht is a mem-

Mr. Callahan has made a creditable
record and in securing tho tax pay-

One or two Republican sheets arc
making a desparate effort to besmirch
the characters of Qov. Renfrow and
Superintendent Niohols by questioning
their respective notions rotating to the
new school book law and contract.
Such efforts will prove vain. Tho
major portion of tho territorial press
and 07 per cent of school patrons ap-
prove tho now law Blnco in causes a
saving in tho price of school books
and prevents tho confiscation of all
text books now in use. They approve
tho contract bocauso it binds the
American Rook company to furnish
school books at tho same prices tho
books are furnished othor states. The
book company gives a heavy bond for
the faithful performance of its end of
tho contraot. Moreover school pa-
trons aro protected since retailers aro
under a guarantee to sell at the list
prices in tho coi.trnct. Qov Renfrow
showed wisdom when he signed tho
law and Supt. Nichols worked to the
interests of the territory In drawing
upa'ontract which removes a cinch
from the xmddlo wr.n and prevents
buyers from falling victims to extor-
tion. Tho exchango feature of the
contract Is equitable and is approved
of by all sensible men who have Ttto.il
tho law and the contract.
Tho Republican papers in tho pay of
Orane of Topoka are wasting valuable
time in criticising a ixtoasuro which la
approved of by tho people.

There Is not a scintilla of truth In
the statement bolng circulated to the
effect that Texas cnttlo shippers aro
qultlng the Santa Fo on account of
alleged slow trains on that road Tho
report was doubtlcs born In tho brain
ot an agent of a rival railroad com-
pany or started from bo mo over-exacting
shipper. During the past ten days
not so many loaded cattle trains have
passed through this city as formerly
but this Is duo to the tact that many
of the cattle districts in Texas have
been cleaned out. Superintendent
Dolan of this divis'on of the Santa Fc
succinctly explains tho temporary de-
crease la ccttlo traffic In an interview
printed elsewhere in this Issue. In
Mr. Dolan the Santa Fo has an effici-
ent and faithful servant and since his
connection with the road 1ms caused a
vast increase in business.
The Santa Fo has always enjoyed
