No event in the history of puirilism

between the heavyweights llobert
Fltsslmtnons nnd Thomas Sharkey.
Between 15000 mid ?000o people oc-
cupied all the available spuoe in the
big Mechanics' pavilion and watched
the contest which every one regarded
as practically deciding the champion-
hhlp of tho world.
lloth men had trained hard and well
for soveral weeks before the contest
and particularly during the lost few
dnys and each had expressed tho ut-
mosl eonudoncc in nic nuuuy to gain iv
victory and tho $10000 jiurso which
tho National Athletic club ottered the
victor.
The National Club had made most
oluboruto proparutions for tho fight
nnd It is probable that a similar con-
test was never witnessed by as many
people. Tho twenty-four foot ring
was located in tho center of the pavil-
lion the largest building of It kind in
Sun Francisco nnd over 150 boxes ac-
commodating from six to ten persons
each surroundod the ring and beyond
the boxes and in the galleries on four
sides of the building were row after
row of chairs. livery seat In the
building was occupied and thousands
of men stood up Iwek of the rows of
chair -i.
One uniiiue feature was the fact that
for the first time in the history of
pugt'.Uiti the management of the ciub
threw open the doors to women and
several hundred women were it at-
temlanee. One hundred police nnd as many
more poIul ofllceni wero in attend
ancc and a hundred ushers all in
erenlng draw escorted the spectators
to their seats.
One of the most notloeable differ-
ences in the men was in recur 1 to

stage-driver who hs6 figured in many

It was fully 0 o'clock before the groat
crowd began to make an impression on
the vast amount of vacant seats. Out-
side of the pavllllon stood a crowd es-
timated at 10000 which commenced to
assemble as curly as 6 o'clock. It is
estimated that the National club took

There was a little delay before Ref-
eree Earp appeared. Announcer Jordan
announced that owing to rumors of
crooked nous Martin Julian refused to
nocopt Enrp aa referee. Jnlian says
ho suggested sovoral men to Sharkey's
backers but all wore rejected. He
says San Franclsoo sporting men had
come to him nnd said the referee bad
intended to give a decision against his
man. Tills statement was received
with hlssos.
Earp made a speech denying Julian's
statement saying he was square.
Thon Dan Lynch Sharkey's backer
said Sharkey had lived up to every
article in the agreement and was here
ready to fight with the referee selected
by the National club as per agree-
ment the men's backer's having failed
to agree on a refereo prior.
Announcer .'ordan announced that
Julian was ready to take anr referee
In the house except Earp. Then there
wan some more consultation while the
crowd howled "Earp."
Julian's charge agalnnt Karp was a
surprise as the ArUona man has
always enjoyed a splendid reputation

FitMimmons says he has given up
his referee in all Ills lights and would
give In to fliis. Theh he stripped off
