THE BARBER'S LITTLE LOSS.
A barber In this city handed a bul-
lion dealer who happened to be In his
shop on Saturday a Mexican sllvor
dollar and asked him wnat no woum
glre him for it. He replied that the
bullion value was S3 cents and that he
would take the dollar from him at that
price to which tho barber replied:
"You can have it. I gave my customer
a hair cut shampoo and shave equal
to 75 cents; he handed mo this dollar;
I gavo htm a quarter change; so I am
out 47 cents on tho transaction." The
bullion dealer answered: "That Is
just what will happon every day If wo
go on a silver basis." Tho shop was
full of nconle. who all loudly doclared
that thoy would vote for McKlnloy
and sound money New York Post.
In Mexico that dollar was worth a
dollar. It would be worth a dollar In
the United States it it could bo taken
to the mint and coined as It could be
under freo und unlimited coinage
linder free coinage the bullion dealer
or anyone else would accept 41 2 X
grams of silver at SI It lathe gold
standard which reduced tho silver dol
lar to tho value of .13 cents. In the
case above quoted the barber lost 47
cents on account of tho gold standard
bnt every other barber in the coun-
try evory other worklngman cvory
other producer cvory other wogo
earner property owner and business
man has also lost by the gold stan-
dard not onco only but constantly
for years. Not 47 cents but In the
aggregate hundreds of millions of dol-
lars. The country at largo has lost
and the measure of its loss is the dif-
ference between years of doprcsaion
or hard times and tho same number
of years of prosperity. Who can
measure tho loss?

to name smaller prices. All we ask is for you to call and ex-
amine our goods get our prices and compare them with other
houses and you will see the point. We don't throw out baits by
selling one article at less than cost and another at two prices.
But we make a low price all around on everything.

PASTK THIS IN YOUIl HAT. .
Tho following Is an editorial from
the London Financial News (gold-
bug): "There is a plain moral in tho re-
mark that If tho United States
would venture to cut herself adrift
from Europe rind tako outright to
silver she would havo all of
America und Asia at her back and
tho command of tho markets of
both countries. Tho barrier of
gold would bo moro fatal than
any barrier of tho custom house.
The bond of silver would bo
stronger than any bond of free
trade. There can bo no doubt
about it that if tho United States
were to adopt a silver basis to-
morrow British trade would be
ruined before the year wa out.
Every American would be pro-
tected not only at home but in
every other markot. Of course the
United States would suffer to a
certain extent through having to
pay hor obligations abroad in gold
but tho loss of exchange- under
this head would bo a mere drop in
tho bucket as compared to tho
profit to be reaped from the mar-
kets of South America and Asia
to say noting of Europe. The
marvel Is that tho United States
havo not long ago Bolted the op-
portunity. It has been a piece of
luck that it has nover occurred to
tho Amcricaus to scoop us out of
tno worm's markets by going on
a silver basis and It might serve
us right if irritated by the con-
temptible apathy of our govern-
ment toward tho Bllver problem
the Americans retaliated by freez-
