Tho oITlcers nd clerks ot the United
States land ofllco in St. Cloud Minn.
are greatly amused over an unusual
affidavit which found IU way Into their
place of business lately In tho contest
case of Alonzo W. Keyes vs. Sarah
Langcn the plaintiff having filed an
aftldavlt of the death of the contestee.
He swears that he does not know tho
present postofflce address or wherea-
bouts ot the cdntestee and Dr. N. K.
Whittcmore of Elk niver follows with
this somewhat remarkable affidavit:
"This is to certify that Sarah Lan-
gen supposed to be single died on
February 8 1S96 I havo no memo-
randum stating ust the cause ot doath
and I have had more to think about In
caring for the living than thinking
about tho dead. I am quite certain that
she Is dead and havo certified to that
fact nt least once before. She was a
patient of mine and that ought to at
least give me authority to know where-
of I speak: and possibly that ought to
bo sufllclcnt guarantee that she i
dead."

Joe Coioman has a boy that ho Is
pretty proud of showing off to people
tho I'uyullup (Wash.) Commerce says.
Tie had him on a Puyallup electric car
the other day and while the boy was
gazing out of the open window his
father Bllpped tho hat off tho boy's head
In such a way as to make his son bo-
Ilco that It had fallen out of the win-
dow The boy was very much upset
by his supposed Iosh whon his father
consoled him by saying that ho would
'whistle it book." A little later he
whistled and the lint reappeared. Nut
long after the little lad seized upon
his fnther's hat and. Hinging it out of
tho window shouted "Now paps
whistle your hat back ngaln."

flemfttkiiule 0ris Dctcrlbed by i
trenth Ontttry Writer.
A very curious description of Babylon
found in a manuscript of the fourteenth
century was publlshod in 1782. "A
city" says tho author "rich In the
gifts of tho ages safe from dleetiM and
distress where all faces are Joyous nnd
where the three holy rlters flow over
costly stones some ot whtflh dispense a
beautiful light and others give health
nnd strength. Thoro Is the emerald
brighter than a mirror: tho Jasper
which preservos from poison; tho gar-
net which casts out demons nnd de-
stroys serpents; the diamond which
-nn only be affected by the blood oi
kids; the topaz which glres lie own
color to all It approaches; tho coral
which wards off tho thunderbolt; the
hyacinth ot the color ot the day Mint
cures all dlsossee; the mnrgnrlta
formed of dews; In u word every pre-
cious stono that possesses miraculous
virtue " How thete exquisite speci-
mens of nature's handiwork canio into
existenco is a question difficult to an-
swer. Wo know of what they are com-
posed but it we except the pearl we
know no .hln of the process by which
thoy nrrived nt perfection; thla Is n
problem which must be lert to future
generations to solve.
It has been proved that the materials
of which precious stones are made nro
of the commonest nnd most plentiful
"and yet" says an old writer "we think
the very heavens concurred with the
onrlh to their 'commlxlon' and so tho
sun left part of his light shining In
them ' Tho diamond which is so daz-
zlngly bright and so pure. Is in reality
nothing more or leas than pure carbon;
the ruby and tho sapphire are com-
posed almost entirely of clay; the emer-
ald of sand or silica while the pearl is
formed of carbonate of lime. This would
strike us as moat wonderful If we did
not remember that out of the dust of
the ground Ood made man whose
beauty and value are far above the dia-
mond and ruby A French writer says:
"It would seem ns though the mighty
creative and organizing powor had
chosen to manifest Its omnlpotenoo by
producing Its most valuable substances
from the most ordinary elements."
Think of the combination ot circum-
stances required In tho formation ot
these bonutlful crystals to give thorn
tho necessary transparency brilliancy
luster and oxact amount of coloring
nmtter.for tho doslred tint to say noth-
ing of tholr freedom from flaws and de-
fects. Another circumstance of great
Interest about precious stones is that
they htue doubles so like thcmselvos
that it Is difficult for tho untrained ne
to detect tho difference nnd yet the one
Is of grent value whllo the other has
little or nono in comparison.
