recently Issued of tho thirteenth an-

Scotland contains papers oh two or
three points of interest to olhors be-
side biologist. In a paper on the
hatching and rearing ot food fishes It
is stated thnt during 1894 and down to
July of Inst your the total numbor of
fry distributed from tho Dunbar hatch-
ery for son fish w.- 7S.7SB.0O0 of which
04.C75.000 worp plake. The number of
cod hntched was 2.760000 mid ot turbo t
3800000 this being the first time (to
the knowledge of tho board) that the
oggs of the last named lmve been
hatched nt any hatchery.
Tho pnpors on tho Influence of mnrlno

areas on the life histories and develop-
ment of tho food flshos and on the long

C. Williamson's elaborate paper on the
reproduction of the common eel. Mr.
Williamson gives a very full account of
the reproductive organs both as de-
scribed by other naturalists and as ob-
served by himself In a numbor ot speci-
mens examined at St. Andrew's and
the paper Includes a description ot the
migrations of the eel and ail that has
been asscertained about its spawning.
It Is a remarkable fact that the ripe
tgg of tho eel has never yet been dis-
covered. Some funny liellefs hnvo been
held at different times r.s to tho genesis
of this very sllppory creature. Aris-
totle said It sprang from what ho called
the "entrails of tho earth." Pliny tho
older said: "Thoy rub themselves
against the rocks and their scrnplngs
fomo to Ilfo." Gesner thought tho opin-
ion as to their generation in the putrid
enrenssoa of doad horses was quite a
lotlonnl one. A Oermon sage forty
yeaiB ago stated seriously that they
owed their existence to electrical phe-
nomena. People are still In ISngland
who believe they are "evoluted" horse
hairs; and not long ugo one pretentious
gentloman gave this recipe for their
manufacture: "Cut up two turfs cov-
ered with May dew and lay one upon
tho other the grassy sides Inward and
In thlH way expose them to the heat ot
the sun; In a few hours there will spring
from thorn an Infinite quantity of eels."
In Sardinia the llshermen rllng to tho
belief that tho so-called water bretlo is
the progenitor of tho eel and an Eng-
lishman has written a small book to
provo the same hypothesis. There can
bo no reasonable doubt however that
this fish I oviparous and spawns just
as othor fish do. Plentiful though our
lack of knowledge Is regarding In this
much wc have learned the notion ap-
pears to be very widespread that the
eel like the lamprey only spawns once
.and thon dies. Pall Mall duetto.
