ceived his education at St Mary's col-

law with D. X. Sprsgae of Wamego
and was admitted to practice in that
county. For four years he was regis-
ter of deeds the only public office he
ever held. He eame to Oklahoma

Tho Kingfisher Times in spooking of
Mr. Angle's nppolntmout says: "King-
Usher appreciates the honor implied in
the selection of Mr. P. S. N'aglc to fill
the responsible office of United States
marshal of Oklahoma. This is the
first appointment made from among our
people to a federal office except to lo-
cal positions by this administration
and this was made almost gratuitous-
ly. It was received by Domocrats in
Kingfisher with heartiest unanimity;
not a dissenting voice was raised ns
all recognized that the man best on-
titled politically and best qualified by
his acquirements and natural abilitlos
had been given the place. His fellow
citizens outside of tho Democratic
ranks were not less enthusiastic and
tendered as warm congratulations.
This unanimity of good fooling has
been increased and crystallied into
firm support of him by the means em-
ployed to dlscouut his fitness for the
ollloe.
His seven years residence here has
shown to those who have seen him
from day to day; knew of his heroic
off rts to build up n name nnd a busi-
ness m a i ow country all the traits of
churactor that have led them to honor
and rcspee him. There is not in

believe that when those pirates of po-
litics have dono their worst Mr. Nagle
will receivo confirmation at the hands
of tho Unltod States sonate and Okla-
homa will have cause to be proud of
her marshal in the person of Patrick
S. Nugle."
The editor of the Mod ford Patriot

There Is no business so intimately
llnucd with the prosperity of a city or
community as its established news-
paper. Its success or failure is the
thermometer of the locality in which
it is published; it reflects tho charac-

world over and is accepted as an in-
dex to a lack of business push of the
city from which it is published.
The failure of a national bank or
any other great mercantile institution
Is looked upon by the public as the re-
sult of local or personal conditions;
that of a nowspapcr that has secured
recognition as the mouth-piece of pub-

out the country as tho result of declin-
ing enterprise and push of tho locality

ItHKU HAYS NO STATEHOOD.
The iron hand of Speaker Rccd is
onoe more in cvldonco to tho disadvan-
tage of tho territories. He has issued
anothor odiet in which he cuddles
f rue silver and bars the progress of tho
territories now knocking for state-
hood. Tho following f pecial dispatch
to the St. Louis Globe-Democrat needs
no comment.
Washington Feb 12. Some time
ago Speaker Reod issued orders that
there should bo uo new states created
by thU congress. This decision of tbe
speaker was mado known to the com-
mittee on territories aud it has been
an open secret for some days past that
neither Aruona Now Mexico nor Ok-
lahoma could come luto the union
while Mr. Reed bosses tbe house The
committee on territories today obeyed
Mr. Reed's ardors by agreeing to make
an unfavorable report on the bill ad-
mitting Ariz ma. The bills admitting
Oklahoma aud New Mexico will suffer
the same fate in due time- Mr- Reed
says that he wants no more free coin-
ago senators. This is the reason why
he objects to the creation of the new
states. It is admitted that Arizona
New Mexico and Oklahoma have suffi-
cient population resources and wealth
to entitle them to admission to the
sisterhood of states but Mr. Reed
Hi-ting no doubt as the agent of Eas-
tern Republican sentiment has de-
creed that they eannot be admitted
while he can leiluence the hoiue of
representatives. It in believed here
that the Republican delegates from
Oklahoma New Mexico and Arizona
while making n show of having their
territories admitted as states for home
consumption are cheek bv jowl with
Rued and will make no effort to resist
the deree of the czar. It can be nc-

OKLAHOMA'S HUIIUOL FI'ND
The annuel distribution of the inter-
cat of tho state school fund of Kansas
has just been mado by the superin-
tend amounting to 44 cents per capita
Tho semi-annual distribution of the
Oklahoma territorial school fund de-
rived from leasing school lands
amounted to 48 cent per cnplta
which certainly makes a very ercdltu-
ble showing in favor of Oklahoma
Had it not been 'or tho partial
failuro of crops last yoar whloh
caused n great many to fall
behind in tho payment of thoir
notes duo in Decomber tho semi-annual
distribution of Oklahoma would
have been 60 per cent larger than the
annual distribution of Kansas. As it was
it fell only two cents per capita below
showing that tho Oklahoma school
lands are producing nearly twice as
much revenuo per capita as tho perma-
nent funds of Kansas. This speaks
well for tho efficient management of
Oklahotnu school lands. Oklahoma
has a rich endowment in hor school
lands if they are wisely handled. It
is really a serious question whether
thoy ought to be sold yet thore
are many arguments in favor of their
sale at the proper time.
The Newkirk Republican sizes the
matter up this way: "Tho Iteed forces
are making a mistake in forcing the
issue for a Reed delegation. McKin-
ley men have been disposed to be very
liberal in this matter and meet tho
friends of the other great man half
way. The common feeling is "I am
personally for McKinley" and Reed's
friends are going to force tho other
side to Btoy wholly by their "personal
preference."
