proverbial. What man lias not at some
time In his career mado soda water In
his mother's kltchon with water vine-
gar sugar and cream of tartar? And
what ft mess he always mado of it!
Ono warm afternoon the boys in tho
flats wantod some Ice cronm. Ono of
them borrowed Mrs. Rawson's freezer
for Jils mother of course. Another
made a requisition on his mother's lee
box; a third borrowod somo of bin
mother's sugar while a fourth "snook"
9omo oranges from home. They had no
cream but compromised on orango Ice.
They had a glorious day of it. Thoy
broko the ice and put It In the freezer
nnd squeezed nnd sliced the oranges
Into tho sugar and water. Then they
took turns at the crank. After turn-
ing It awhile they would opon It to
boo how It was getting nlong nnd each
stuck his grimy fingers Into tho moss
to sco how good It was. This thoy did
with such expressions of gustatory
satisfaction ns: "Um-iu. Goc-whlz
ain't that going to bo good!"
They ground it nil afternoon until
thoy could hardly turn tho crank.
Then thoy took It out and tho boy who
borrowed the frcozor wanted to divide
it and ho who provided tho sugar
thought ho was tho propor porson for
that position. All of thorn mado a bid
for it and finally referred tho matter
to a big boy who dlvldod It by giving
himself tho lion's share. And In the
brisk north wind they sat down and
nto tho chilly stuff for lco cream lu

A Method of Incubation Which Is as
Old ni tho Clirlithiii Y.ra.
Among tho follahs of modern Eg) pt a
process of Incubation Is in uso which
has been handed down from antiquity
perhaps from tho tlmo of Dlodorus who
forty years before the Christian era
said that tho Egyptians brought eggs
to maturity with tholr own hands and
that tho chickens hatched thus were
not lnforlor to those hatched in tho
usual way. Tho process Is described
la Natur.
Ovens aro built consisting of a cham-
ber about olevon feet square and four
feet high with a flat roof. Above this
another chamber nlno feet high Is
built with n vaultod roof having a
small oponlng In tho mlddlo to admit
light. Below a largor opening com-
municates with tho room underneath.
In cold weather both rooms aro kept
closed and a lamp Is left burning in
each ontranco thon bolng had through
tho lower chamber.
When tho oven Is ready tho proprie-
tor goon to tho neighboring villages nnd
collocts eggs. Thoy aro placed on mats
strewn with bran In tho lower cham-
ber litres aro thon lighted in troughs
along tho sides of tho upper room tho

are then removed for five days to an-
other chambor where there are no fires
hut tho air Is oxcludod. After this thoy
are placed an Inch or two apart nnd
continually 'urnod this last stage tak-
ing six or sevan days.
Tho ogga ars oxamined constantly by
being held against the upper eyolld to
reveal it they are warmer than the tut.

Uencral Harrison on tho 1'reslUencjr.
Ex-President Benjamin Harrison
will discuss "the presidential cilice"
very comprehensively in his "This
Country of Ours" series in tho forth-
coming February Ladies' Home Jour-
nal lie will dotall the provisions and
methods of electing a chief magistrate
and will have much to say bearing
upon tho eligibility of a president for
re-election; will give his views as to
tho length of tl.u presidential term
and express rather decided opinions
relative to the annoyanco to which
presidents aro subjected from office-
seekers. The articlo is practical and
is I 2d upon experience and observa-
tion. General Harrison believes that
i ho fears expressed by the trainers of
our constitution that the power of the
olllco is such as to enable an ambitious
Incumbent to secure an indefinite suc-
cession of terms havo never been re-
alized "In practice the popular
opinion has limited the eligibility of
tho president to ono re-election. But
some of our leading and most thought-
ful public men have challenged the
wisdom of the tour-year terra anil
advocated six years usually with a
prohibition of the second term. And
unless some method can be devised
by which a less considerable part of
the four years term must bo given to
hearing applicants for ofllco nnd to
making appointments It would bo
wiso to give tho President by extend-
ing tho time a better chanco to show
what he could do for the country. It
must bo admitted also that ineligi-
bility to a second term will givo to the
Executive action greater (Indepen-
dence. It seems unlikely however
that any change In tho Presidential
term will be mado unless somo unex-
pected event should stir into action a
thought that Is now ot a theoretical
rather than a practical cast."
