"No Blr."
"Mebbe I'm mistaken but I can't
hardly believe it. He was short and fat
same as you aro had a bald head and
waa bow-legged and ho chewed gum
all the time he wn3 sassln' me."
'Are you talking to mo Blr" shouted
the fat man us ho sprung up with
clinched fists.
"Yes sir I am. If you hain't tho

"Didn't I say I never saw you bo-

"i'l? you did but you look jost like

"Of course I'm not the man. Do you

Misn of Science Dlipoted
of Twi
Popular Notion.
The man ot science was tall and
straight with a bald spot on the crown
of his head and cold gray eyes peer-
ing through gold-rlmmod spectacles.
Having been Introduced and left alono
with him I hail to say something so
I remarked:
"Indian Bummer la pieitv nearly duo
now isn't it?"
Now Indian Bummer was not pretty
nearly due. But It woa tho only sci-
entific thing that popped Into my head
I thought of course that he would pre-
fer the talk on scientific topics.
"Indian summer?" ho askod quizzi-
cally. "I don't know what you mean
sir."
"Oh" said I a llttlo confused by his
manner. "Indian summer you know
Is tho warm spell we always havo after
tho first frost. You know Indian sum-
mer. Regular thing don't you know?"
"No I don't know" said tho man of
science coldly. "I see that you aro a
believer In a long-exploded myth. I
used to hear of this alleged Indian sum-
mer when I was a boy. They still
talk nbouf it In the In tho country dis-
tricts I believe. There is no such
thing as Indian summer."
"Oh but yes" I persisted quite
crushed brt not convinced "you know
we always have a warm "
"Yes yes" Interrupted the man of
science with a wave of his hand "It
Is true that sometime? tho weather
warms after It flrat gets cold. That's
perfectly natural. The weather isn't
governed by rules. Why shouldn t a
warm wave follow a cold ono in Octo-
ber or November as well bb In any other
month? Don't we have cold waves lr
late May or June? Why then don'
you speak of Indian winter at thost
times?. The phrase Blr Is a relic of
former Ignorance."
After a few moments' silence I made
another attempt.
"The equinoctial will soon be upon
us" I remarked.
"The what?" asked the man of sci-
ence. "Why th equinoctial storm you
know" I explained.
"Nonsense" ho responded with a
disgusted Bhrug of the shoulders.
"Equinoctial rot! There is no such
thing as equinoctial storm. I have
heard Ignorant persons use the phrase
beforo but It always vexes me. It la
another relic of bygone ages."
"Hut" I began beginning to feel
vexed and feeling that there at least I
stood on solid ground.
"I know what you are going to say"
he put In. "Yes we usually havo a
heavy storm about the period of tho
equinoxes. Dut what of It? Wo us-
ually havo heavy storms befoio thone
periods and after them too' don't we?
The equinoxes have nothing to do with
the storms which arUo from wholly
different causes and may or may not
occur at the same time. Equinoctial
grandfathers sir!"
I then gave It up. New York Herald.
A Wecplnc Tree.
The weeping tree of the Canary Is.
lands Is one of the wonders of plant
life. It Is of the laurel family and
rains down a copious shower of water
drop3 from lta tufted foliage. This
water often collects at tho foot of the
tree and forms a kind of pond from
which the Inhabitants of tho neighbor-
hood can snpply themselves with a bev-
erage that Is absolutely fresh and pure.
The wajter cornea out of the treo itself
through innumerable llttlo pores situ-
ated at tho margin of the leaves. It is
sues from the plant as vapor during tho
daytime when the heat 1b sufficiently
great to preserve it in that condition
but in the evening when the tempera-
ture has lowered very much a consld-
ernbla qunnlty of it is exuded in tho
form ot liquid drops that collect near
tho edges ot the leaves until these mem-
bers so bend down under their increas-
ing weight as to pass for them th
angle of the limit of repose when the
drops tumble off on the ground below
In a veritable shower.
THE MYSTIC THREE.
Sotnrli'.uff About tb Tlma-IIomorad
buperitltlon for tlia Number.
I was reading an article the other
day on tho superstitious regard for the
number three and It set me think-
ing. There must be Something in it. The
third repetition of anything is gener-
ally looked "upon as a crisis. An arti-
cle may be twice lost and recovered but
when lost the third time ia lost for
good. Twice a man may pasa through
some great danger in safety but the
third tlmo he loses sis life.
It however tho mystic third can bo
successfully passed all is well. Threo
was called by Pythagoras the perfect
number and.we frequently find its use
symbolical of deity. For instance there
aro the Trinity of tho Christian relig-
ion the trident of Neptune ' and the
three-forked lightning of Pluto". In my-
thology there are the three Fates the
three Furies and the threo Graces.
Shakespeare Introduced three witches.
I can remember the old nursery rhyme
about the threo wise men of Gotham
and the song ot the threo blind mice
whose tails were cut oft by the farm-
er's wife.
I have heard ot three volume novels
nnd know that most doctors order their
medicine to bo taken three times a day.
Wo eat threo times a day. The Bible
speaks of a man being thrice blessed
The old saw "If at first you don't suo-
ceed try trf again" gives threo trials.
Cleveland tried three times for the
presidency and succeeded twice. Surely
he Is not going to brave fate and try
again?
