Learned Talk About Ureal.
It Is related that the leatved astrono-
mer Mary Somerville. wa once over-
heard earnestly discussing with the al-
most equally learned Harriet Msrtlneau
as to whether a certain gown should or
should not be dyed to match a certain
shawl. It somehow seems Incongruous
to learn of such trivial Interests on the
part of two such women. And yrt why
should It follow that because women
educate tha brain they must therefore
forbear to attempt pleasing? Why be-
cause they learn science must they un-
learn the arts and especially the art of
being beautiful and well dressed? There
'tally Isn't the remotest logical -sequence.
It Is now conceded that even a woman
suffragest may be beautiful! A delight-
ful woman speaker ot high repute
among friends upon one occasion de
clared It to be her conviction that Oo.l
meant women to adorn the world at
much as he meant the birds and (lowers
to serve that euiL nd that so far from
sin there was positive virtue In at-
tractive dress. The sin lay In giving
time money and thought to It which
rightfully belonged elsewhere.
Clerer Trlrk on the Girl.
The famous Farmlngton School for
Girls closes at a later date than that
set for most commencements. It has
been found practically Impossible to
keep the students until the last day's
exercises. Those not Immediately In-
terestcd will each year slip away to
their h-mes before the appointed time
for departure At length the faculty
have hit upon a brilliant scheme. The
Yale Glee Club pays Its annual visit to
Varmlngton late In the spring. It has
bci-n decided to ask the members If they
could not conveniently set a date for
their arrival nearer to that fixed for
the school's closing. As was naively
argued "The Klrls won t go home till
the Glee Club lias been here so It be-
hooves us to have the Glee Club here
as late as possible.
The Serpent' Trick.
The power of continuing motionless
with the uplifted head projecting ten
ward for an Indefinite time Is one of the
most wonderful of the serpent's mus-
cular feats and Is one of the highest
importance to the animal both when
fasclnatrr.g Its victim and when mim-
icking some Inanimate object as for In-
stance the stem and bud of an aquatic
plant hero It Is only referred to on a
count of the effect It produces on the
human mind as enhancing the ser-
pent's strangeness. In this attitude
with tho round unwinking eyes fixed
on the beholder's face the effect ma
be very curious and uncanny.
