Enid'Wavkj If the Texas legisla-
ture Is nnythlng Uko tho royal hippo-
drome that mot over In Qutlirle last
winter they will proLibly discuss that
prlzo fighting bill until Christmas and
then "when it do pass" will be likened
unto tho Vegan bill no good.
An cschang3 says: Don't asK an oil-
tor to suppress an Item of news: Some
other paper will get It anyway. The
next day something- will happen to
your neighbor and if ho asks to have
It suppressed you will bo tho first oco
to jump on the editor for not "daring
to say that his soul was his own."
Take your medicine when the news
happens to fall your way for really
you havo no more claim on the paper
than your neighbor. Nearly every nay
tho editor Is called on for roasts aud
several other kinds of cookery for tho
benefit of this and that one nnd yet
those who request this would no more
think'of writing what they as!: tho
editor to writu and assume the re-
sponsibility for it than they would at-
tempt to fly.

Tho New York Tribune is crying
loudly for Cuban freedom. Among
other things it says: No one can
doubt tliut popular sympathy in this
country Is with lho Cuban patriots
ngalubt their Spanish oppressors. This
too la not duo to any selfish purpose
of annexing the island. Seventy year?
ii go it is true that consldeiatlon came
up even if It was not then more potent
tli ii n today. Jefferson did not lies!
ia'e to inuku this avowal in his famous
Ii II' r to President Monroe of OjL 21
vv
"I candidly confess that I havo ever
looked on Cuba as the moat Interest-
ing nddltlon which could bo made to
our system of states. Tho control
whiuh with Florida point thislbland
would fiUe us over the Gulf and tin?
countries and isthmuses bordering oi.
it as well as all those whose wutcrr
11 j iv iuto It would fill up tho measure
of our political well being."
Hut annexation is not nt this time In
t lie imiid of I lie AiticrU'tin .eip
They know that what Cuba is aiming
at is independence and with that thej
tympatliizo unselfishly nnd instinct-
ively"! as they havo evor sympathized
with all efforts of Amerlran commun-
ities to throw off a European yoke.
Hut thoro is another strong elemonl
in tho matter. The atrocities of Spain
in Cuba appeal to the sentiment of
humanity. It is quite enough that a
transatlantic kingdom should hold
control over an American possession
in virtue ot tho desire of the latter to
remain dependent; but when that ecu-
trol can only be maintained by des
potic cruelty and by going outside tho
well established rules of civilized war-
fare no wonder that the feelings of
Amcrivans aro enlisted on the side of
free Cuba.
The question Is how far tho admin-
istration is ready to respond to this
sentiment of tho people by such prac-
tical notion as Is iu iU power.
A tlOOl) TIMK COM1.NO
According to the New York Sun a
western iihllosopher prophesies that
the time U rapidly approaching when
men will bo relieved from all arduous
labor by now applications of tho inan-
imate forces of nature and more es-
pooially electricity whuh will be put
utour service through discovery nnd
invention. Twenty years from now
ho says thoro will be no moro hard
labor in civilization.
'I he present tendency unquestion-
ably looks that way even If the end
ho foresees is not reaohod In so short
u timo as he fancies. Steam and elec-
tricity have already token off the
Mioulders of men many pf the heaviest
burdens onco borne by them. They
have replaced human strength in lift
iW Uuildlng materials ! loading
fillips in agricultural op'cratious and
In many other fields where formerly It
was put to iu severest strain Thm
have also largely superseded the power
of horses and thus those animals so
long associated with man In the hea-
v.Mt work of tho world ore sharing
with him tho relief afforded by (be
use of those inanimate agencies. And
yetjtbellllenlumjias not wa.lojta ap-
pearance. '
Anothej advantage enjoyed by this
generation will be Increases! and ex.
tended in equal monmro during the
next few years The Tribune refer
to a report that preparation are wak-
ing to put a the market nextyer a
larjr supply of bicycle at greatly -ucd
Friers. It Is pmumtble that
beforo many years their cost wfil de-
cline like that of the sewing machine
and that of the clocks and watches
until It Is brought within tho means
of almost everybody. Tho rich man
with tho fleetest horses and tho grand
est equipage will have no advantage
over the poor man In possessing the
means of travelling rapidly over tho
roads. Hoth of them will have their
own private vehicles nnd each can
ride when ho la so Inclined. Invention
and competition besides reducing tho
cost of the bicycle will provide for its
propulsion by othci motors than mus-
culnr strength so that the rider will
enjoy luxurious case at a hilling ex-
penso of money. Tho burdens man
carried on their shouldors or in their
hands they can transport with the aid
of machinery and. they can extend
greatly tho area within which it is
possible for them to pursue tholr acti-
vities. The nursery rhymo talks of
the time when beggars will ride and
veritably tho day is approaching.
The application of electilclty to pub-
lic transportation will largely reduce
Its cost to thoso who provldo It nnd
those who use It. Tho running ex-
pense of all machinery will be de-
creased greatly so that It will be mado
available for multltudca of private
uses for which the muscles of man and
brute aro now employed. The main
part of tho drudgery of civilization
will bo done by tho forces of nature
harnessed for human assistance and
the exemption from exhausMng physi-
cal labor once enjoyed by the few only
will bo shared by all. As It is under
the present progress of science and
mechanics the poor man has case und
luxuries formirly denied to even tho
richest and grandest. The markets of
the humblest nnd most crowded dis-
tricts now supply in abundance fruits
and meats which not many years ngo
were rarely obtainable even by tho
most prosperous; and as the cost of
production and transportion decreases
theso will be still farther multiplied
and brought within the means of the
pcoplo universally.
Perl aps the dream of a socialist of a
time when all tho material blessings
of life shall be extended so that- they
can bo shared by all in tholr fulness
may bo realized: but the fulfilment
will bo brought about by tho very
means socialism would destroy; by
capital competition and the impulso
which scales for individual superiority.
It will not come from the nveragc
ability of tho mass but from the su-
perior ablllry of tho few whence has
come the general advancement of man-
kind in nil ages. It will not come
from checking individual faculties so
an not to best your mates according
to tho labor union principle but from
the eager striving to best your mates
and to got to tho top.no matter if
others cannot attain the height until
you havo shown them how and havo
given the means of rising to tho sum-
mit of advantage. Aud after all
misery sickness poverty and the
effects of stupidity and vice will re-
main in tho world.
