Austin Texas Oct. 1. Only twenty
flvo members of tho legislature have
arrived and judging from present In-
dications it is hardly probablo that a
quorum will answer to roll-call.
A careful poll of both housei by in-
terested parties develops the fact that
from public utterance and woll known
Ecntimcnt of the members tho anti-
nrlzo fli?ht bill will fro through tho
senate with tho emergency clause
with votes to spare. It was anticipated
that the light on this clause would bo
made more successfully in tho senato
than in the house but this is a
mistake.
The fight to kill tho emergency
clause will bo waged bitterly in tho
house by tho Dallas people. A com-
mittee of business men will arrive
here from Dallas and will plead with
tho legislative committees to knock
out tho emergency clause on the
ground that it will confiscate thou-
sands of dollars' worth of property in
Dallas which have been outlaid on this
light.
Up to the present writing of tho
nineteen members of the house here
nine arc opposed to tho emergoncy
clause and of this uumber four aro
out and out antagonists of any anti-
prlzo light bill at all. The fact that
up to the present time one poll of the
house breaks oven 'gives the friends of
the Dallas fight management cause to
feel good and their attorney V. 1.
Allison stated that ho believed tho
emergency clause would be defeated
in the house.

AN OMINOUS COMET
The Flery-Halred Monster of ffaje Ap
proaching the Earth.
Vatiib Oct. 1. A special telegram
from Kiel observatory announced that
the approach of the periodical comet
of t'aye had been discovered by Pro-
fessor Javelle of the Nice observatory.
Without taking an alarmist view of

thcorj so graphically developed In M.

tween a comet and the earth is de-
scribed with astronomical precision
and during the extraordinary phenom-
ena that ensue there was unusual heat
the first phases of which were similar
to those now prevailing In northwest-

the present high tctnperulure is tho
procursot of a tcrrestiul smash-up with

wns desired to move many torn of rock
at once. Thu other end ot thu ludgo
was soft nnd shelly and three small
puff blnsts were placed in it. The
btnall blasts were to bis exploded by

largo blasts by means of a battery ami
wires were attached to the six churircs
and stretched over the hill for u dis-
tance of about ouo hundred yards
where the battery was placed. Abu
Williams was placed in charge ot it
and was not to touch tho button which
released tho electric spark until or-
dered by Miles MeTlernan who was
personally superintending thu work.
At 5:30 o'clock everything was In
readiness and thu fuses to the small

ten of his men together with a team
of horses and u dog walked under the
overhanging ledge to escape the rain
of small stones which it was expected
would follow thu explosion of the

pleted and quicker than thought a
spark of fire leaped through tho wires
to tho six big charges of giant powder.
So quickly did the second explosion
follow the first that none of tho men
had left the retreat under thu over-
hanging ledge.
Tho massivu ledge was torn nsuudor
and two immense pieces of rock each
weighing twenty tons fell upon the
men and crushed them to the earth.
Those who were killed wero under the
center of the ledge and th';su who
were only injured stood lit one side
and wero not caught beneath the heavy
rocks.
