Her intorviow with Leclero and her
anxiety about him had disturbed hor

her lover who stood in danger of 1h-
ing accused of tho hideous crime that
had been committed in tho house. That
niarriago could not now Ikj not for a
long tlmo if it was over to bo Sho had
offered to keep hor promises to marry
Mnurico Lecloro that very day but ho
had declined. And now that sho was
nblo to bring somo show of calmnotH
mid reason into her dizzy brain sho felt
ho was right. Tho marriago must not
bo. Not yet nwhilo.
And in tho meantimowhat was she
a forlorn penniless girl to do? IIov
was hho to uxist? Her aunt's monoy a
shudder convulsed her as tho thought of

this money forced itself uiwn her was
all gouo. Sho had in hor possession only
a fow pounds barely enough to carry
hor at tho very outside over a fow weeks
What would bo her fato then? That sho
was her aunt's solo heir did not occur to
hor nor tho fact that tho furniture of
tho house whatever it might bo worth
would eventually 1h hers. Sho only
knew that sho was possessed of !) sov-
ereigns nutl sho was doubtful if sho had
any right to mi them. They had lieun
given to her tho previous day by her mint
for housekeeping purposes.
Sho had a fairly good knowledgo of
tho millinery business hutbho was woll
awaro that situations wcro not to bo
picked up at a moment's notico ; that
sho might Kiwnd many and many a weary
week hunting for a place And iu tho
meantime what was to support her?
What was to hapixm to her?
Sho had in Chiyflelds no friend no
intimate unselfish friends who would
holp her now in her diro trouble. Sho
was now in n morbidly sensitivo condi-
tion about everything and it seemed to
her that every ono would shun her. Tho
only ono sho could think of who had
over shown her any real courtesy and
kindness was Mrs. Percival tho doctor's
wife. But that was beforo Maurieo had
ipiarroled with Dr. Percival
Sho loved and trasted Loclerc but sho
could not repress tho fooling that much
of his troubles his troubles apart from
this which would ariso out of tho pres-
ent tragedy had been caused by hor.
Indirectly of course. Hut ho had in his
eagerness to mako 11 homo and positiou
for her got himself into difficulties from
which ho now seemed unable to oxtricato
himself.
Ethel possessed no shadow of a suspi-
cion of her lover in connection with tho
crimo which had been committed iu tho
room which was now almost at hor feet
that awful room which would haunt
hor forevermoro. It was terrifying to
think of what had happened whilo sho
had been asleep last night what had
happened whilo sho was so very near it
11IL How was it sho hud heard no sound
during tho night; that nothing had dis-
turbed hor until tho ringing of tho boll
iu tho early morning had aroused her
from sleep tho boll which had sum-
moned her to behold tho most awful
sight her young eyes had over witnessed?
Sho possessed a morbid horror of doatli.
This morning for tho first timo sho
had seen a dead body felt a dead body
tho dead liody of her dear aunt
.Mechanically sho had commenced to
pack a trunk which stood in hur room.
For hours sho had occupied horsolf ar-
ranging and rearranging packing and
mipackiug her thoughts scarcely occu-
pied with what sho was doing until nt
last tho waning light of tho October aft
ernoon warned hur that night was np-
jiroaching night which was to cover
with its cloak tho dark deeds of wicked
men uight which now possessed tor-
rors for her which had nover boforo
wandered into hor troubled brain.
Sho crouched over tho trunk almost
afraid to mova Sho could not oven col-
lect her thoughts buflioieiitly to think of
striking a light Iu a half conscious
way sho remembered sho hud left her
candle 011 tho hall tabla Sho could not
go down stairs past that hideous ibxir
insldo of which hor aunt lay dead mur-
dered in tho darkness. Sho was a pris-
oner iu hor room. Should sho have to
spend auotlier night in this house?
Could sho live through such a night?
At lost eho stood up from her trunk
and exhausted with her emotions sho
had stumbled to a chair which stood ut
the head of hor bed. She tottered to the
seat and gat staring at the door of tho
room which faced tho hwul of her beL
And now a now train of thought
forced itself upon hor. There wore duties
to iorform to tho doail How was the
performing her duties? Or what was to
bo doue? Tomorrow her aunt would be
taken from tho house Perhaps tomor-
row sho would find tho courugotoda her
duty to forget her own sclflbh troubles.
Tonight hho could not
Sho had no idea how long sho had
been seated at her bedside uor when sho
had fallen asleep but she was awakened
out of a pleasant dream a dream which
was not overshadowed by any susploion

With a stnrtleibcry sho sprang to her
foot unconscious whoro sho was. It was
somo appreciable moments boforo sho
could reoollocfc whoro fiho was standing
or what had ImppoiMl.
Then sheioneil tho door and an-
swering tho summons again repeated
with 11 "Yos I am hero" sho saw.a
glenm of light on tho lauding beneath
hor.
"Yon sloop roundly. I am glad to
laiow it. Will you follow mo down
stairs?"
"Oh Dr. l'croivul" cried tho young
girl iccogiii-iing tho voice "I will lo
with you piCMjntly. "
She hastily retired to her room and
bathed her faro in cold vnter. Sho know
sho could not hope to -uslu nway all
traces of her tears! in a moment but
what did it matter? There wastho kind
doctor below wniting to give hen tho op-
portunity sho sought tho opptu-tiuiity
of escaping from tho housooi ih .dead
Taking 11 clonk nudnhatwltl: lu ' sho
descended tho stairs nnd was soon stand-
ing tilottgsiriu Dr. Percival whoso kind-
ly eyes showed no trace of surprise at
Miss Rodney's disheveled appearance.
Ho held a lamp in bis hand.
"I want to speak to you" ho saiil
"I will light you down stairs' holding
tho lamp on high.
Ethel sought tho front room. As sho
descended tho stairs sho saw alllght iu
tho dining room nnd hoard thoilmm of
voices.
Sho rightly surmised that somo of tho
police forco wcio in tho room. Sbo had
asked them oarly in tho day if it was
possiblo that tl(oy would roliovo her of
tho charge of tho houo until she hail
timo to recover herself. Sho had been
told an inquest would bo hold and sho
know that hor mint's body would 1)0
removed next day from tho houso but
during tho day she had battled strenu-
ously with hor thoughts whonover sho
felt they ww; drifting into ait inquiry
ns to what was to happen. Now sho
felt iossesed of 11 strange new courage.
Whatever wub to lie done whatever her
duty to tho dead was sho would face it
unflinchingly. Tho stoim of griof had
passed away Bounteous sleep had clear-
ed tho terror laden atmosphere.
"Now my dear young lady" said
Dr Percival "I doit't think this will
bo 11 proper place for you to siwiid tho
noxt fow days. You must pardon my
intruding ujiou your affairs but at n
timo like tho present conventionality in
not the moat cominendahlo form of
treatment. "
"It is very kind of you to interest
yourself in mo" said Kthol "partic-
ularly at a timo like this. " Sho felt tho
tears rising to hor eyes as sho spoko
but not tho tears of grief which hud
choked and blinded her earlier in tho
day.
"Now" said "Dr. Percival "I havo a
commission for yon from my wife. Sho
asks that you. will come round to our
place for a fowdays until you can sottlo
your plans for tho future. I am glad to
seo you havo got your lint and cloak
with you. Wo can send fur anything
olse yon may require. Comn with ina "
A quick flush of pleasure mounted to
tho young girl'ii cheeks.
"Thou I am not altogether friend-
low " was tho llrst gratofnl thought that
surged through her.
