SOUND TARIFF DOCTRINE
WHY SOCIALISM FAILS
No matter how much difference there may be in
the tomorrow of Socialism in it s today when it
shall be inaugurated as a system all things must be
owned collectively and that the high and the low
come to a common level; the good and the bad start
even; the idle and the industrious share and share
alike; the illiterate and the learned the capable and
the incompetent the fool and the wise man the vir-
gin and the troll the negro and the white all come
to the Universal Brotheahood pot and ladle out an
equal porringer full of pottage.
God! What a sordid sickening dead-level! What
an enforced equalizing of all men and all women in a
world where God never made two grains of sand two
ieavts of the forest two birds of the air two fish of
the sea two beasts of the field exactly equal.
Only in a political sense can anyone ever dream
of two men being equal' for our eyes our common
sense tell us that such a thing as equality in strength
capacity character or in the elements and achieve-
ments of manhood has no existence among men.
Socialism proceeds upon the idea that equality
is there or can be put there; and the effort to prove
that the idea is correct has been made time and again
and again. It was not only tried among the Ancients
but it has been tried in modern times and it was tried
by the colonists who first settled in North America.
Failure dismal failure has been the result of
every experiment. Why? Eecause Human Nature is
radically eternally different from what the Socialist
assumes to be.
If all were equal and all were good. Socialism
would be unnecessary even from the standpoint of
the Socialist.
Give us absolute equality and universal goodness
and we don't need anything but .a little time to reach
an equal distribution of wealth and an era of Peace
on Earth and Good Will to Men.-Watson's Maga-
zine for May. ' '
A Washington special says:
"The president toay submitted to congress a
letter from Secretary Taft accompanied by numerous
appendices in which the secretary who has the full
approval of the president lays down the principle that
supplies for the Panama canal snould be bought in
the cheapest market all things considered whether
American or foreign."
'Now here's sornd tariff doctrine for you good
democratic doctrine just what the democrats have
always contended far "buy in the cheapest market
sell in the highest:" j
Why Uncle Sam should have a privilege not
given to every citizen is not clear. What's sauce for
the goose is sauce for the gander. If Uucle Sam can
buy materials to build his canal in the cheapest mar
ket why shouldn't our farmers and all other consum-
ers buy their clothing their hard ware implements etc
in the same market.
This is a phase of the "square deal" that doesn't
seem to apneal forcibly to the administration. And
by the way the adoption of such a policy would be
a very effective "trust-busting" scheme 'and the ad
ministration would have' us believe that it is very
sincere in its desire to demolish monopoly. '
But tariff revision once flirted with even by the
President is not'mentioned even in whispers among
administration circles "stand pat" stands as the
mexorable decree when the subject is mentioned.
Uncle Sam's assumption of privileges in by his
canal supplies however may have the effect of set-
ting some people to thinking. The tariff question is
not a dead issue by a long shot.

Meat is so scarce in Germany that "die Deutsche"
have gone to eating dogs. The United States counsel
Mannheim reports that the people of Saxony ate
1464 dogs while the total consumption of canines in
the Empire during the same period reached 2405. Its
a dog gone tough country on dogs. Some enterprising
exporter might gather up dogs in Chickasha' to feed
the Germans for a year or two.

We may be ignorant on such matters but it
strikes the Extbhss that any man or woman in Chick-
asha ought to be able to buy good enough "cloz" for
themselves at our local stores without chasing off to
Oklahoma City Dallas Kansas City or any other
city.
