ENCOURAGE FORESTRY.
il attracted m rvu amount of public attention the
recent launcliiiij; of a state forestry association in Oklahoma City
was an event of far-reacliiii;; significance to the state. Ami o
similar importance is the announcement coining (rout Stillwater
that the forestry learlineni of the state A. t M. College is to ile
vote special attention to the development of tree culture in Okla
lioma.
America was Messed hv nature with snch an ahmid.mce of
timher that it has heen difficult to realize that the day is a
proathiiifr when our supply will he exhausted and that even now
the growing shortage is being lelt. t oiisetieiilly. those who urr
the conservation and the cultivation of forests have had trouhlc
in retting a hearing. In Old World countries particularly in tier
tii.niv. where the necessity for re forestation has heen rcognized
hv statesmen and economists for many ears it is very different
tree culture being regarded as a matter of the highest concern
to the state.
" If the Oklahoma Fore. try Association functions as it should
it will render service ot mcstmialilc value to the state r.xcept in
cities and towns where shade trees are set out forestry has re-
ceived almost no atteniton at the hands of our people and the need
for it has scarcely been recognized. 1 he first work of the new as
sociation' should he to get its mission property before the people
of the state; a campaigned education should le productive of
lictidicial results.
Generally speaking the eastern and the southeastern norliotis
of Oklahoma arc well supplied with magnificent timher and in
the latter section luuiheiing is an important industry. Hut for
tue most part tlie western liall o the state is treeless. To make
trees grow wherever they can he grown should he a .state mlicy
anil all practicable plans to this end should be encouraged
It is probable that the A. ft M. College through its forestry de-
partment will be able to make a survey of the forest resources
df the state and to formulate a definite program for the develop-
ment of forestry. At all emits something of this sort should be
undertaken and it is to be hoped that the forestry association will
lend its influence in this direction.

love and .taxes .... . .. ;:; .
It is a truth wA'ch Cupid long ago discovered that when a
young man. and a maid rcallv fall in love with each other they
must necessnrilv think- that they are different from ever'vbodv
else and that never before in the history of the world rtot ex-
cepting that affair of Konieo and Juliet" has there ever existed
such love as theirs says a trade journal.
And so to every generation its problems are different and
more dilficult than any that have ever gone before. We of this
generation feel and probably with some reason that we face
problems of reconstruction and business readjustment Lrre.ter
nan any that ever came before. Our taxes seem harder to bear
and we have more obstacles to overcome we think than rightly
should brtong to us. "hn
There is a certain solace and a lesson for us to be found in
he words of that wise man who among other things was as-
'Friends and neighbors the taxes are indeed very heavy .
