; Merely emulating the aut is not
sufficient in these days according tc
the agricultural experiment station ol
tue University of Arizona; you ve koI
to prevent his being too industriout
himself. It is the harvester ant whose
indefatigable industry is receiving sec
ond thought.
The farmers of the university saj
that the harvester ants might becomf
a menace to crops and have launched
a crusade against them. The menac
is not serious because it is being taker
in time. That is the function of the
experiment station.
In times gone by the ant enjoyed 8
high reputation among writers and
philosophers for its general InduBtri
ous qualities and good behavior. Solo
nioii who had a corner on the wisdoir
inaiket in his time issued standing
advice to young men afllicted with th
hookworm to call on the ant and tak
a few lessons in doing things and tta
busy little insect was frequently writ
ten up in the newspapers as an Intel
loLtiial and moral person of the flrsi
rank.
Lately scientists have boon taklns
some unkind shots at the ant family
Ants are credited with devastating
gardens biting chickens snoilinf
porch parties and making themselvei
generally obnoxious in the kitchen and
dining room.

ABLE TO HYPNOTIZE FISH
Louisiana Farmer Is Credited With l

his naked bands recently gave a pub
lie demonstration of his feat at hl
heme near Kroussr.rd La. in a poo
12 feet wide SO feet long and 5 feet
deep while a motion picture company
took movies of the performance.
After his hands are under water l
few seconds Chauplin is able to cam !

catches and throws upon the short
any kind of fish he may bo requested I
to catch. He requires only a few mln 1
utcs to catch enoufih Abu to support
tho entire town of Uroussard wltu s
day's mess. Fishing is bis principa'
occupation.
Chauplin explains that he is able tc
make different sounds with his handf
under water to call the fish to him
He claims to be able to make a fish
come to him with one hand then drive
it away with a slick in the other band
and again make it come to ulm and i
to be able to keep this up indefinitely
Chauplin is an uueducuted country

Shrewd Indian Gamblers.
Gambling on the monsoon rains le'
by no means a new game in India
but a new variety of it was recently
brought to light in tho Punjab canal
colony districts. What was known
as the kharaba system of revenue col-
lection prevailed there under which
land revenue and canal dues were not
levied If the crop failed to mature.
So a cultivator would sow more land
than he could possibly hope to ma-
ture by canal water and a normal rain
supply. Then it the rains were super-
abundant he would reap the benefit
while if the rains were merely or-
dinarily good he would have no rer-
enue to pay on the land used for tho
little gamble. The game has been
stopped by the abolition of the khara-
ba system.
Brass Buttons No More.
The Grenadiers and some of tha
other British guard battalions are now i
giving up tbe brass letters on their
shoulder straps and wearing instead
the name of their regiment worked In
cotton on cloth as the men of the
Royal Flying corps have always done
The guards are aleo to havo the brass
buttons on their tunics replaced with
bone buttons and the practice may be
extended throughout tlft army.
;' The soldiers will not be stall sorry
as they have to spend a good deal ot
elbow grease in keeplnff the hast
shiny. The change is being made not
because England is running short ol
brass but because experience has
shown that the metal shines in the
sunlight and catches the eye of the
enemy's snipers.
"Marrying for a Home."
Marrying for a home or any sort oi
marriage as a means of support may)
be considered by some as a part of the '
business of marriage but generally
speaking It is a risky business a wild
speculation in which the girl pays very j
dearly for something he Is not likely
to want when she gets It and in many
cases will rid herself of on short no-
tice. And the price she pays is not
only her youth and whatever charm
and ambition Bhe may possess but a
poor miserable broken life. Bailey

Took Needle From Her Skull. 1
A needle has been removed from
the brain of a western woman. Many i
years ago it got into her scalp from a
rough towel with which she was dry-
ing her hair. Since then the bit of
steel had worked quite through her
skull. An 18-Inch magnet was used
in the extraction only a small incision

Ltky for Billy.
The girl that Brown married was
bepiitiful musical and all that sort of
thing hut she was not strong on friz-
zling beef and mashing potatoes. How-
ever she questioned the neighbor la-
dies and did her best. "Billy dear"
remarked the young brido as hubby
returned at the usual hour "I hava
made some lovely pies for supper. I
was going to have sponge cake too
but my plans were upset." "Tnat'a
too bad" responded Billy looking like
a real disappointment. "What was
the trouble?" "It was all the drug-
gist's fault" was tho surprising re-
joinder of wifey. "He forgot to send
around the sponges."
Watermelon Sirup Is Possible.
According to the fruit-Juice special-
ists of the agricultural department a
delicious sirup for table use can be
made from watermelons thus giving
the watermelon grower a by-product
from the Biirplus watermelons he haa
in his fields. This by-product can bo
used in the manufacture of ginger cake
homemade candies and as a Bweeten-
ing and flavor for ice cream as well
as for most purposes for which sirup
is used in the home. The sirup 'is
reddish brown in color and is sweet
and well flavored. Specialists point
out that the juice of watermelons con-
tains only about seven per cent of
sugar but the ease with which tho
Juice can be extracted offsets the low
sugar content.
