Washington ftUiy 18. It is interest
ing to note us proof of tho vitality of
tho republic of Mexico that in spito
of the disturbance in norma! condi
tions the foreign commerce of tho
country has been to no appreciable ex
tent affected and that in fact from
the figures of Mexico's fiscal year end-
ing June ;!0 HI13 (for the year 191.'-
H13) its foreign commerce was tho
largest in its history.
Details as just furnishud by Direc
tor General Barrett of the Pan Ameri
can I'nion. cau now be given to sub-
stantiate this statement. For example
the entire foreign trade of Mexico
both exports and imports amounted
in 1912-1913 to $218088977 (note that
all figures are given in the XJ S. gold
dollar) while in the corresponding
period of the previous year it amount
ed to 140323 719. If the exports art
considered separately it will be found
that there is an encouraging increase
in that movement the total quantity
exported being $1.10202 808 against
$144994564" and that even compared
with 1910-1911 a gain was shown. In
Imports for 19121913 Mexico used
5yV.K8t5.lSO and this too was above
the amount in tho r-revlous year al
though the banner year J91J-19I1 was
higher by a very small amount.
The interest in such figures can ha
continued by studying die character
of the goods imported to supply thu
needs of the people of Mexico For
example in leather goods which in-
cludes shoes and such manufacturer!
articles the country required almosii
$3500000 worth of goods; in lestile
fabrics of cotton wool and silk the
big total cf close to $i:!000OW) was
leached; of machinery and tools there .
was an Importation of over -$12000-000.
In the matter of (he source of
these importations " it can be state i '
that as usual the V nited States fur-
nished relatively the largest amount
its goods sent to Mexico over $4S00(-
000 being more than equal to die sum
sent by Great Britain (Jeniiany France
and Spain in fact than all Europe put
together. Argentina in South Amer-
ica lias increased its trade with Mex-
ico decidedly during the past year
sending to that country its good pro-
ducts just as it Ms begun to stud them
to the United States.
n the mutter of experts it is re-
markable that according to the tables
from which the Pan American Union
gives this information industry in gen-
erally kept on with but small Influence
against it during the period in ques-
tion. The amount of gold exported
fell from $21000000 to Jl:!Wnooo. On
the other baud copper exports increas-
ed to over $18000000 where It had
been Ie:.s than $170ooooo the year be-
fore. Coffee and rubber dropped bu1
chiclo (chewing gum ingredient)
hides and henequen (fiber material i
increased. Tobacco and vanilla in-
