Dr. McKeen not only knows fanning

the ground up but be is just as proud
of being able to stack hay and bnild

1st be has taken the best out of the
'three vocatiot? aud culled the most
j valued experiences in each lice that
jhis fellow iian may benefit by his ob
servations. His range of rision is
iarge. a? is his racge of topics which
includes the community builder the
community church the man from the
country the rural community ia the
fate of the nation tbe( rural church
its needs rural ' problem solved and
unsolved overchurched and under-
churched America the efficient rural
church the boy problem our beEt
crop and why we are poor.
One of his most interesting series
cf lectures on community building is
one coos prising five topics the preach
(
er. the teacher the physician the edi
tor the banker. His statement is
; most positive that instead of shifting j
J the poorest preachers and unsophisti-l
! rated young teachers to the country
tho best preachers the best teacher
and the best editors should go to the
rural district to mould that public!
character which in time is destined
to leave its imprint oh men who will
become city builders.
j One of the strong points that the ru-
ralist makes in hi leetures was again
emphasized in an Interview which was
accorded the Express efore tie ex-
pert s departure. The man from the
rural district who goes away and ac-
quires learning and efficiency should
return to his own village and become
identified with its progress and the
advancement of its people.
-wo are maKing a living that we
might make a life. Life is more im-
portant than the living though the
kind of living helps shape the life.
Across the platform of the . Choctaw j
school have gone in ten years one hun-
dred and fiftyRve graduates. These!
may not have gone out into the world
as teachers preachers doctors law-
yers bankers and huiness men but
to my mind the most splendid part of
it is that the majority of the gradu
ates of this school have gone back tot
their own rural communities and are
there investing their lives to good ad-
vantage in community development.
"The tragedy of lural life today is
men and young women going into our
educational institutions are going out
in to the great centers instead of re-
the development of the community.
"Recently I stood before a rroun of
1S8 students in a small educational in-
stitution.
Five cut of six of those
jyouug pi.plo itnie from the country
districts and a vote revealed the fact
that but three of them were going
back to give their lives and services
to the country district. This is trag
ical:"
"1 wish you might see an Arkansas
community which I have in mind which!
was- about as far advanced as the
hiiulermost in the country before it
vas rejuvenated by a young man who!
went away to get education and expe-
rience and then refused a most flat
tering offer in a large city in order to I
return to his native community to ele
vate it. After numerous hardships
and difficulties in th? way of non-sup-(
port and lack of interest be reached
the stage of a high school which he
built regardless of the dictum of the
powers that be that such an institution
was rot necessary built it practical-

ee. as I a;d this Arkansas communi-
ty as I saw it recently. The old iog
cahin has given way to the more mod-
ern home; by the side of the modern
home is a modern barn and silo. Out
in the fields you will find high grade
if cot thoroughbred stock and the
same is true of tie poultry herd. This
community has its organizations and
its institutions. It has its farmers'
club mothers" club zand orchestra
singing class it3 boys' and girls" farm
dubs and all of those things that go
to the making of a modern communi-
ty. The supervisor of this school real-
ized that a mere educational institu-
tion was not sufficient He realized
that the people should have religious
aa well as secular training. He estab-
lished a Sunday school that has a mem-
bership of more than 20f. Today that
is one of the ideal communities in that
great state."' .''--
