"God Sav. tia Mark."
When the phrase "'God save tb
mark" more common In writing than
in oral speech Is used the reference
Is to an old superstition developed in
Ireland. It was believed that If a
person telling of an accident or in-
jur to some one who had been hurt
in a fight touched the like part of his
own body or fiat of his hearer there
was danger that it would be an evil
-omen of similar injury. So It be-
came the practice to ward o3 such
consequences by exclaiming "God
save the mark"; that Is avert the
harm threatened.
For Self-Protection.
"Nature gives up her secret with
rreat reluctance" observed the doctor.
"Well" commented the professor
"if she has any secrets that reflect on
the family she'd better lose no time in
killing off the whole human race for
we're finding out lots of them these
days."
Preparing His "Trousseau."
Sam Bernard the well-known come-
dian said at a wedding breakfast la
New York:
"I am glad to aee here a luxury to
which all' brides and brides grooms are
not weeustomed.
"1. for Instance called one day In
June upon the dear old lady who did
my washing and Ironing.
"'Where Is your son thla morning
Mra. Bmith?" I said. 'I don't see him
around. I hope he isn't 111.'
"Oh no' said the old lady. 'He's
to be rcarrteit to-morrow and he's np-
staln. In bed while I wash out hla
trousseau.' "
There's uu nse talking. "lit
grand old name."
Too Big a Field.
Tears ago while Reverena Shan-
Aaloupe was a student at the semi-
Ury he undertook one vacation sea-
son to sell fire extinguishers.
His pleasing address and affability
enabled him to make many sales.
However he encountered the usual
rebuffs which are the experience of
all agents.
The theological student had gained
access to the office of a surly broker
and forthwith began expatiating on
the deluging powers of his incompar-
able fire extinguisher.
"To bell with It!" roared the bro-
ker fiendishly.
"Ob my dear man." expostulated
Ebandaloupe "this extinguisher 4oe
not deserve the extreme virtue with
which you credit it" Harper's
Weekly.
The Pope's Wardrobe.
The outward robe of the pope la

brero or hat. Is red and has a gold
cord and tassel. Beneath the cloak
Is worn an alb made also of wool
of the lambs of St. Agnes and girt

Wnere Titles Mean Xuch.
The question of title is one of tbt
most delicate in Germany a fact ol
which the stranger Is constantly re
minded In Intercourse with the people
particularly witn tne women rrau
Professor Frau Director Frau Doctor
are nest particular about their hus-
band's titles when attached to their
cwa rames. But when it comes to
military circles It is dlffereut and botb
men and women protect vigorously
vgainst this sharing of titles. Lieut
von B objects to having bis wife
atVr-iseed as Frau Lieutenant which
tltie belongs as well to the wife ol
Lieut S hmldtor Hall of a less aristo-
cratic regiment.
Knew of One or Two.
"Is there any available substitute
for rubber?" asked the Instructor of
the class.
"Yes sir" juiswt-red Miss de Muir
one of the fati coeds. "I think 'etarV
er 'ga;e' is just a? ?ood."
