VACATIONISTS SWARM RESORTS
ON LAKE DESPITE HIGH RATES
Cleveland Ohio July 12. Travel
on the great lakes this summer is
surpassing all previous records. Doz-
ens of steamers jammed to the gun-
Wales with tourists ply their way up
and down and across the lakes to
cores of Islands beaches and summer-
resorts i liiostiiof-iithem already
aswarni with cottagers and .those on
vacation bent. in'
By the end of: the rather brief lake
travel season close to 500.000 'r-er-sons
will have answered to the lure
of the lake according to H. A. Bern-
ler manager of the Akers Folkman
Lawrence Co. water travel agents
here. His figures are based on the
number of lake steamers available
their capacity and the reservations
made. 1 .
Semler rportod a ceaselivn stream
of men women and children flowing
In ob the offices of ail la!u naviga-
tion companies. They come from all
j parts of the country and from many
parts of the world. The confirmed
globe-trotter he reports has turned
frem European travel to exploring
the summer resorts dotting and bor-
dering' the lakes. Person." "ho heie-
tofore spent their moments of leis-
ure an drecreation in the mountains
or af the seashore are clamoring at
the various lake ports for steamer
accommodations.
Special lake trips are widely popu-
lar. Trips of from one to two weeks
in length are attracting the greatest
number. The cost of travel has gone
up about 25 per cent over last year.
A week's trip can be made at a trifle
over an average of $10 per day per
person.
Several companes offer a week's
tour of the lakes for $72.50 er per-
son. Their boats toucvh a dozen
ports with brief stopovers :;t points
notable fo rtlveir historical or recrea-
tional attractions. One Canadian line
offers a trip 1000- miles in length
with stops at principal Canadian
cities oh the lakes. Another special-
izes on trips of 1600 miles.
Semler attributes the present great
popularity of the lakes to the In
creased earnings of the average per-
son the over-crowding of ocean
liners deferred vacations a natu-
ral swing from land to lake resorts
an dthe attractiveness comforts and
reasonable cost of lake tours.
