AT THE TIUIK-
Hieing at the ' Fair Grounds
ContinuesA Oood
Crowd.
Tbe managers of the fair and
raciog association are determined
to give the people of Chie.kasba
what tbey had promised in epite
of the weather and they are doing
it.
Yesterday was an almost perfect
day for the sport and a good
crowd went out to pick tbe win-
ners. The first event on the card
yesterday afternoon was the un-
finished free for all pace which
was interiupted by tbe rain of the
dy before. The talent still hung
onto Stranger O and be was in-
stalled as favorite at tbe prohibi-
live odds of 1 to 3. That be
was easily tbe best horse in the
race was evidenced by his taking
t'jree straight heats and tbe purse
of Stiff). Time 2:14. Deck 2nd
Liauie bears 3rd.
Tbe second event also an un-
Guirued rcethe 2:14 trot. Misty
Dawn bad one heat to her credit
on Thursday and won the next two
in easy fashion. Red Phil was
2nd Yucca 3rd.
1 he running races are perhaps
the uiOBt exciting judging from
the eagerness of tbe crowds to
get their money on. In the 3rd
event 3 sprinters faced the dg for
a sprint of ; ol mile. The wise
ones seemed to think there wg
nothing to do but cash tickets on
Ben Jobuson. He got off in front
at tbe drop of the flag and kept a
ood lead until tbe turn into the
stretch was made when be was
caught by Billy Jor jan and in ai
driving finish tbe latter won by a
eugtb; Den Johnson 2nd and
Ocean Wave 3rd.
Fonr good ones lined up for the
fourth event o a mile. The tal
ent picked asiitcgton I'ara ana
he justified their choice by winning
easily with two lengths to snare
from Clinton a Dream 2nd Lena
Rivera 3rd
The management have made
themselvrs very popular by pro-
viding good running races and
some clean sport for their patrons
and we trust the race meet will be
a regnlar feature hereafter each
year.
There are no races this after-
noon all events having been
declared eff by the management;
1 he races have not been a success
financially on account of tbe
weather. Tlio races that were
ran were the best eer seen beie
and it to be Imped that next year
will see their efforts splendidly
rewarded.
Tho 1 usrdo Club winch bad a
book at tbe track nid not no as
much businrss as was expected.
Perhaps the. absence of strangers
mid the habit of the people to lay
their wagers among their friends
accounted for tbe poor business to
some extent.. When the runners go
to the post hiiMuess picks up and
he who cannot find a stray dollar
lo put on his chiice must care very
little about racing.

studying np on rao'ng form else
is " luckier than a pet possum. "
He was able to pick a winner in
every event yesterday afternoon.

yesterday afternoon and his work
at the bell was eatistactory to own-
ers trainers and jockeys.
CRACKED A SAFE.
Logan k Friend Lose $2U00 Valu-
able Notes But no Money
Was Gone.
Logan & Friend well known
lumber dealers of ChicKaaba were
the victims of a safe robbery some
time during last night. When the
proprietors opened their office this
morning they found tbe safe stand-
ing wide open the inner door
forced and broken and the strong
box missing. No money was
missing but over 2000 of notes
and valuable papers were gone.
It is said that the firm had the
combination written on a slip of
paper and pasted just below the
knob. They kept no money in the
safe and the robbers probably
concluded this was an invitation
for thera not to blow i and tons
ruin it forever. ?o they took
them at their word and run down
tbe combination with tbe aid of the
key breaking open the the inner
door. No money was missing but
tbe papers are a heavy loss.
