Overseas Commerce
Washington July 23 An estimate
of foreign trade for the year ended
June 80 1!1! puta the excess of
this country's exports over its Im-
ports at $3704000001) nearly $100-
ono.OoO above the figures for the
same period in lit IS. Since the arm-
istice interest In foreign trade lias
greatly Increased according to offi-
cials of the Bureau of Foreign anil
Domestic Commerce and opportuni-
ties for our goods abroad have
doubled.
To keep pace with this develop-
ment and to show the way for
American exporters the Oommoroc
Department through its Foreign
Commerce Bureau will send out this
year twelve additional field trade
commissioners. This will make a
total of 'lit American field agents
in foreign market territories.
As an index of the increased in-
terest in export opportunities Con-
gress made an appropriation of $1-
000000 this year for the bureau's
work. While this rum was alni )'.
double the approbation I" any past
year it was hut twi thirds of the
amount asked of Congress.
There are at preesnt 29000 ex-
porters receiving the daily reports
and special bulletins of the Com-
merce Department representing
nearly as many firms actively in-
terested in the more than $(i00000()-
000 worth of goods now being an-
nually exported. The value of ex-
ports jumped to this figure in HUH
and it is estimated the total will be
several hundred million dollars
larger in 1!)20. Prior to the war the
avenue of our exports averaged only
about $2500000000.
To keep up with the opportunities
in markets overseas the Department
lias been co-operating in its field
vrork with the Foreign Trade Ad-
viser's office and the Consular Serv-
ice of the State Department. In ad-
dition to the various consular ag-
ents and foreign trade agents the
Bureau of Foreign and Domestic
Commerce lias been developing the
trade commissioner agencies iiii'mi-i
gliout the world during the la .1
couple of years. There are now
twelve commercial aLtaches at the
leading American ministries and em-
bassies. There are twenty-five trade
commissioners now active in for-
eign fields keeping American ex-
porters InToi-mod of their opportu-
nities and in a few months twelve
resident commissioners will be sent
to the various fields where there is
now no embassay representation.
Manufacture for foreign trade ex-
port will absorb much labor during
cur reconstruction period. The ex-
port industry has been (-ailed the
labor balance wheel because it
take3 up the slack in the labor
market. Secretary of Commerce
Kedtield is establishing co-operaton
between the Shipping Board and the
Commerce Department so that the
reports of foreign trade and mark-
ets by super-cargoes on our merch
ant vessels will be added
information that will enable
