An Agreement May Soon be Reach-

BEVERIQGE MEETS GORMAN
Democrats Not Disposed to Fili
buster Against the Bill.
Washington Jan. 16. Develop-
ments indicate that an agreement
will shortly be reported for a vote
on the statehood bill.
Senator Beveridge met Senator
Gorman in a lobby of the senate
after the Maryland senator had re-
fused to permit any day being set
for taking a vote on the statehood
bill and tsked Gorman if some
time definite could not be agreed
on for a vote on the bill. Gorman
replied that he did not see any
reason why some understanding
should not be arrived at by the
first of the week. lie stated that
he would consult with his demo
cratic colleagues and inform Sen-
ator Beveridge of the result of the
conference today adding that there
was no disposition on the part of
the democrat to filibuster against
a vote being taken.
It now looks as though a vote
would be taken by January 25th.

' Delegail3ns Working
Oklahoma City Man Brings
News from Washington.
Mr Alexander T. Hamilton of
Hamilton Rales &. Co. has just
returned from Washington where
he has been with the delegation
from this city working in the inter-
est of statehood.
Mr. Hamilton gave a very inter-
esting and encouraging interview
to a Times-Journal reporter this
morning which serves to show
how things look to a man who is
actually on the ground.
Mr.: Hamilton said:
"The delegation is doing fine
work taken as a whole. Every
member has his coat oil and is
going 'at it with a vigor that means
statehood. Oklahoma City has a
corps of genuine enthusiasts in the
field in the person of C. G. Jones
who is chairman of the delegation.
Mr. T. I). Tu who deserves special
rnentiou as he is certainly a power
within 'himself; Mr. Anton Classen
Representative McGuire and Den-
nie Flynn. Mr. Flynn us well as
Mr. McGuire has been using his
utmost efforts to secure statehood.
As regards the attitude of the dem
ocratic senitors relative to the
proviso regarding Arizona and
New Mexico will say that I have
seen a number of southern sena-
tors who voice the sentiments of
Senator Clay of Northern Georgia
who said 'Were it not for the
Arizona and New Mexico proviso
opposition to statehood for Okla-
homa and Indian Territory would
melt away almost immediately."
The same remark can be quoted
from Senator Bacon also of Georgia.
"The most important work was
the striking out of the clause es-
tablishing the federal court at
Guthrie and in my opinion the
minds of congress is made up con-
cerning the capital propositisn and
it certainly will be left to the
people of Oklahoma to . choose
their own capital site.
"Indian Territory has respotided
nobly to the call for a single state-
hood delegation and has able
representatives in the field and I
will say that if all the towns had
given the support to the vork as
Shawnee Kl Reno Chickasha.
Ardmore Knid and Oklahoma
City there would be no doubt as
to immediate results. There seems
to be a jealousy all through the
Guthrie end of the territory that
may jeopardize the passage of the
bill. It takes -a united front to
accomplish things in Washington.
"Senator Beveridge says he
hopes in spite of the filibustering
tactics used by the opposition to
secure a vote in a week or so. The
opposition is not well founded and
therefore cannot accomplish any?
thing except as obstructionists
and Senator Beveridge thinks the
bill can easily command a majority.
"Oklahoma has no fault to find
with her delegatsion as everything
that can possibly be done is not
overlooked." Times Journal. J

Still Working to Control Liquor
' Traffic in New State.
Washington Jan. 16. A stren-
uous effort is being made by various
Indian and prohibition societies to
have retained in the Oklahoma and
Indian Territory statehood bill
provisions for local option or gov-
ernment control of liquor selling.
Father William H. Ketcham of
theWashington headquarters ot the
Catholic Indian mission called up-
on Indian Commissioner Fraucisli.
Lenpp in company with the Rev.
Dr. E. R. Sweet and held a long
consultation recently looking to-
ward the discovery ot some method
by which the liquor traffic may be
repressed.
All churches are working to-
gether 111 the matter. Dr. Sweet
is a Methodist minister and is sec-
retarvof the Church Federation of
Indian Territory. The idea is to
prevent the sale of liquor to the In-
dians. "In all the old beaties" said
Father Ketcham the other day
"there is provision put there at
the request of the red men them-
selves prohibiting the liquor traf
fic. The prohibitions have work-
ed inestimable good. And now that
statehood bills may become laws
invalidating the treaties similar
provisions have been incorporated
in them and we are trying to keep
them there. It is said Commis-
sioner Leupp favors the regulation
It is well known that liquor is the
curse of the aborigines and should
the fences be let down to whisky
sellers it would undo all the gov-
ernment has accomplished in half a
ccu'airv."
