CHICKASHA OKLAHOMA FEBRUARY 7 1903
LOOKING SOUTH WESTWARD
Hobart Dt'uioiTat: It should be the pleasure and cer-
tainly the duty of every citizen of Oklahoma to say and do
everything possible ia making this the greatest of all th;
states. The ratura) reHOurees visible and Invisible are
id our hand. AH that is necetwary is to develop these great
Sifts of nature. Gn'berod here are the diversified mind:;
of almost every clime nnd'in that fact lies the great op-
portunity to convert this Ingenuity into force which will
bring Oklahoma into the firmament of states as one of thr
stars of first magnitude. Oklihoma soil is worth more than
any bonds or bank stock or certificates of shares in an;:
Industrial institution. Mother earth never errs but the
great institutions of commerce do. Speculators can manip-
ulate your Lard earned money while you sleep sometime!!
make more of en lone for you but nature directed by the
band Of Providence never decieves. It never takes with-
out first notifying ou and off en gives beyond your ex-
pectations. Working along this lit) a. In the last issue of
the Southwest Development Xcws appears the follow-
ing editorial:
From every section 'of the southwest comes evidence
of activity In re?l eiate and structural circles. The recer.t
financial stringency left In its wake one wholesome lesson.
It taught the pr-o;il-i that investment in stocks and securi-
ties which can bj wiped out by a few ruthless operations
of plungers are a poor place in which to put surplus money.
It taught them that supply and demand must Inevit'ibiy
rule the commerce of the world. Therefore In that por-
tion of the country which by area and endowment ia capa-
ble of producing enormous quantities of commodities fo
export purposes there exists the greatest opportunity for
.stable Investment.

chants had won the price by quoting prici
fanners who were the best customers of the mail order
houses know by advertising that they could get as good or
better roods at home tor the same money or at a less price
without the trouble and expense of freight. The merchants
showed the farmers that it would be to their mutual ad
vantage to trade at home. and that was all that was ne
cessary for the Kansas farmer is a pretty wise individual
A man who knows .as much about the mail order business
aa any man in Emporia because his business has suffered
with the rest and he therefore has to study the system of
the enemy in order to be able to cope with it says that
where the mail order houses were shipping hundreds of
packages to Emporia six months ago they are now ship-
ping less than dozens"
Civic improvement is one line of progress that is open
for Chickasha in which there is no possibility of failure
if we put the requisite proportion of ginger into our ef-
forts. We can't land a railroad or a factory every day but
we can keep busy paving the streets laying sidewalks
setting out trees cleaning up the town erecting necessary
public buildings and in divers other ways. The civic im
provement route is. not only the line of least resistance
but the results to be obtained are just as valuable as any
course offers.
Senator Beveridge has performed the usual republican
stunt by making a noise like tariff revision on the eve of
a national campaign. For years honest candid republican
leaders have conceded the necessity for using the knife on
th tariff laws but the "interests" have squelched every
Incipient move in that direction. Just before a campaign
a promise is thrown out to the voters to be forgotten p.s
soon as the election is over.

Tbe Southwest with its vast resources and immense
productive power raiurally enough offers unprecedented
opportunities for materbJ profit because of Kb unfinished
condition and Its myriad of unutilized advantages. For
example the Southwest needs millions of more people; its
farms need tens of thousands of more occupants; its f-irlo-ries
need hundreds of thousands of more operatives and
artisans; growing towns necessary by reason of contiguity
to rich productive sections need more men who will con
struct nd create men who will establish enterprises and
who will hew fortunes from the almost interminable ave-
nues of opportunity.
Public parks and boulevards will help to make Chicka-
sha a more desirable place of residence. It will be easier
to get them now while land is procurable on easy terms
thin it will ever be in the future.
A certain horoscoper is predicting the end of the world
In December 1908. It's awful to contemplate but as there
appears to be no way to escape it let us prepare to sub
mit to our fate.
Plans are being formed for Chiefcusha's second annual
"Clean-up" day. It is a movement in which everybody
will cheerfully join.
It is a certainty that we can have no more paving with
out storm sewers. Bonds must be voted when the time
comes. !

JOHNSON IN INDIAN COSTUME
Guthrie Leader: The legbbJcrs
sometimes wisely lay aside the cares
of state for social amusement. At the
masquerade ball last night Represen-
tative Johnson of Minco was pere-id
in the costume of an Indian i.hi u
and was one of the most notable fig-
ures on the floor. Many felt that he
should have been given first prize and
though his friends "rooted" vigorously
foi him the judges decided adversely.
.Mr. Johnson by the way is one of
the Indian members of the hou- be-
ing an eighth blood Choctaw. Rep-
resentative Whltehurst was also am-
ong those in attendance.
